Question Why Parr hitting this nymph ?

Hi Guys

I have been looking though my river box, seeing what i need to stock up on ??

Found this Black PTN with a chartreuse hot spot (leaded) i played with last season on my local river, it was my first season on the river

Whilst i found a plain old black PTN worked very well for trout but i found this hot spot version was almost exclusively hit by Salmon parr/smolts as was a complete black PTN but with a chartreuse floss tail.

I had a similar experience whilst up on the Upper Earn for a week last May
I put on a greenwell cruncher with a lime green Thorax(An experimental tying) ....had to take it off in the end as the Parr/Smolts were going daft for it.
I cant explain the reason. They didnt seem to be so keen on the std. greenwell version or the claret thorax version.
I asked at the local boozer where the fishing bods congregate but couldn't get a answer.

As Jim says young salmonids can see UV colours very well. The ability fades quickly and is almost gone by the time they are big enough to be of interest to anglers.

Salmon parr tend to live in loose shoals, mosrly in shallow riffly water, often displaced by trout which tend to be more terrirorial.

The same chatreuse hot spot seems to work well on some sea trout flies - going off thread - some maintain that homeward migrating anadromous salmonids use the same (reactivated?) UV receptors to "see" magnetic fields.

Some places even though there are summer fish present this is all I can raise. Someday this little thing will be what some happy angler will call a steelhead. Other areas all I catch are juvenile sockeye salmon obviously they are trying to eat the fly. I have no special explanation other than there are a lot of them and they are hungry.

In Scotland you often get the same where Salmon run. Fish near a burn and no matter what fly you have on the first thing to the fly almost everytime is a Salmon Parr. Its all about survival first to the fly gets the meal
