Why lead there on a sedge pupa pattern, will it fish or swim like a natural sedge pupa with that lead there?

sorry to pick this out ...but , that does look like lead?? with the way its marked when youve squeezed it to the shank , if it is lead its obviously bigger than a size 8 split shot which is illegal ,im uncertain as to how you would stand if caught fishing with it being fixed to the hook ,but then again shot is fixed to the line so both can be lost ,anything above size 8 must be of non lead material ,there is nothing that i know of that states its ok if its fixed to a hook as its still lead shot above the legal requirement ,just trying to save you and others some hassle if caught with it ??? but EA laws state ..

Fishing weights
No fishing weights made of lead may be used
except those of 0.06grams or less and those
of more than 28.35grams. In angling terms
this means that lead shot from size 14 to size
8 and lead weights of over 1 ounce can be
used in fishing.

It is illegal to sell or use lead weights of larger than size 8
However it is not illegal to own them or to use them as an integral part of something else such as a swimfeeder which has a big lead strip, so for example you could put your old shot in a rattle tube or use them as the head on a fly. Personally I'd always paint or varnish a lead head as it will tarnish and eventually go white if left untreated (Lead oxide!)
It is important that any shot used in this way is securely fastened, we do not want to give the swan huggers any more ammo (is that a pun?) Superglue will work but as lead is soft and malleable it eventually works free. You need to check fleis regularly and re attach any wandering shot before it disappears on the back cast.
For this reason I have stopped using it, there is nothing worse than making the perfect cast and finding your fly floating on the top. Lead dumbell eyes also suffer from this problem and often break after a couple of fish or repeated casting.
Get yourself some tungsten beads, a 2mm tungsten bead weights more than a lead shot of the same size

Cheers
