Default What can you make with the following materials:

Right, so i've started up fly tying and love it, don't have many materials, i'd go out an get some more but with the snow outside i'm kinda stuck inside.

I've got the following materials:
Peacock Herl
Olive Seal Fur
Hare's Fur
Dark Hare's Mask
Natural Muskrat Fur
Pheasant Tail
Brown and Ginger Furry Foam
Black and Olive Chenille
Olive Marabou

Besides, GRHE, PTN and Damsels. What can i make?

Go for a mix of the Seals Fur & Hare Fur, should give you a nice dubbing.

PT for thorax covers.

Well, you'll just have to make lots of things without hackle/ tails, throats, and ribbing for now! You could use the Pheasant tail for now though.

Get some capes and wires/tinsels for ribbing for your next purchase.

In the meantime, wht not try a scruffy little Cormorant.... Try Carl's dubbing mix.... and a sparse olive marabou wing.

try a damsel type fly.

tail olive marabou
B170 hook with bead or not.
Gold wire for rib
Olive chennille body
Olive seals fur as a thorax with the pheasant tail as a thorax cover.

or a gold ribbed hares ear nymph

or a beetle type fly with the peacock herl and foams using the hares fur (dark) as a substitute hackle and just tease it out with a needle so as it looks scruffy around the eye draw back with your thumb and forefinger.just as good as a hackle.

Fly tying is like a jigsaw, you just need to put the bits together,Enjoy and have fun.

Depends on what you wish to spend,You can get cheap chinese and indian capes. It also depends on the flies you wish to choose to tie.

A black cock and hen cape is always a good one to start off with, you can buy them cheaper or you can get them in bags off the cape.

Go to your local tackle shop or Im sure there is plenty of Good trade members here who will send you what you need.Dont go daft on expensive ones untill you know what your doing with them.

Red Game, cree, is also 2 other good ones.

As I said decide first what flies you want to tie and then build on materials from there.Look at what you have already and what flies you can tie with those materials and then decide what cape or feathers to get from there.

For example.
You have peacock herl, with Black hen cape feather you could tie a black and peacock fly.or a Black spider(if its black thread you have). You could use the gold wire as a butt(ie tied on the shank before the hook bends) then peacock herl and black feather for variation.

have a look at the terms used in fly tying it will help also to understand.

Tying is as addictive as fly fishing and your materials grow just like tackle.(and cost as much)but its fun.

Since you have furry foam you could do a hopper... use rubber bands for legs...
Here is a site with lots of tutorials Charlie Craven you could also look around the one in this forum, lots of good stuff. Make you a list of items to get (don't go crazy and buy stuff willy nilley like someone I know )
