Agreed - I use electrician copper wire although I buy the really fine stuff from the flyshops.

I have got into the habit of running raw copper wire through a chunk of wax and then polishing off the excess by running it through a piece of tissue to prevent tarnishing, but whether I actually need to do this I am not entirely sure.

Yip, UTC is the best wire but there are other sources. For copper.... windings on motors and adaptors can give a lifetime supply in various diameters. Hobby craft have some enamelled wires, blacks good. For silver fine, some coaxel...(TV arial cable) is a good source if you can get the silver stuff, again a lifetime supply.
