Default TMC 2499 SPBL Alternatives

Hi,

Anyone know of an alternative for this hook.

I understand Dohiku HDG 644 is similar but I cannot find a uk supplier.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hanák 550 BL is very close to TMC 2499, don't know about their availability in the UK though

Moneyhanger,

The Dohiku 644 is very similar to the 2499 SPBL in larger sizes ...

Sizes 8, 10 and 12 have a straight shank behind the eye; sizes 14, 16 and 18 have a continuous curved shank.

If you take a look at the Flytying Boutique website, there is a photo of all the sizes of the 644. (just click on the "view larger image" text below the main picture of the hook)

Kind regards

You could of course just buy them from fly tying boutique as they do have stock of the Tiemco

Coincidentally I've just bought a packet of both patterns in sz18 from Phil at FTB in order to try both for the CDC midge I'm tying for the Small Flies Swap.

(apologies for fuzzy photo, obviously beyond the range of my compact's macro)

Comparing the two the Tiemcos (on the left) are straight-eyed, slightly smaller and a more goldy-bronze colour. The Dohikus are a blacker nickel colour, slightly down-eyed and a more curved in point. The points on the Tiemcos look amazing.

I think I favour the Dohikus for the midge pattern. I hope my eyesight is up to the challenge!
