Default Too many dry patterns ?

Was talking to Craigie ( cheers mate) by pm earlier , about munbers of dries i hope to tiein the close season.

At the rate I'm going I probably wont get to start them till next month, and generally like to put the fly tying gear away during the season, so might be a bit of a squeeze.

So - too many?

The ones with the asterisks are not up for discussion !

*CDC and Elk
*Klinkhammer - Black and Olive
*Griffiths Gnats
*JT Olive
Tiny Black Fly ( size 24/26 - a la Proctor in T+S)
Tiny Greenfly ( as above )
Balloon Caddis
*Snipe and Yellow ( with thorax and treated with Watershed - lethal )
Snipe and Black ( as above)
Tape Wing Caddis ( a few of...to try this Oliver Edwards pattern)
Foam Beetles
Deer Hair Emerger ( again, just a few, to experiment)
Dirty Duster ( maybe )
F fly ( Black + Olive ) ( Maybe )

Too many ??

Am i doubling up here - eg Balloon caddis/tape wing caddis/CDC and Elk

Do away with the tape wing , not worth the bother , wings not last and you got sedges well covered .

If you must go down that route have a look at these >> http://www.flyforums.co.uk/fly-tying...hoo-sedge.html

Very quick and easy to tie and do last well ...

Hi Mate

The F Flies are well worth a place in anyones dry box - Size 18s in Olive and Black plus Grey have nailed me loads of fish in these sizes.

Good Luck

Col

I guess the short answer is - no ! I've already added to the list

Which brings me to a new question re the Oppo by Jeremt Lucas - any good?

Worth adding - i think not?

I'd put the F flies at the top of my list

Black, Olive and Yellow in sizes 16 to 22

They will catch fish anywhere at any time

Cheers

Agree 110% with CR on this - definitely my top dry fly this year and last.

HI Spider......

Interesting choice of pattern's there ! I was particularly interested in your Snipe & Yellow, the thorax treated with Watershed ?? I take it that this is to enable the pattern to be fished in the surface film, rather than sub-surface. Might I also ask "what material do you use for the thorax".

Regards... Grannom.

Thanks Chris and Co , will move the F Fly up. I possibly used it in too big a size last year (14) .

Grannom, I've always been a Spiders fan, but was always a stillwater fisher until 3 yrs ago. I dont like long rods, and i dont like droppers, so Spider fishing was never going to be as easy for me on rivers.

So I tied a few with Hares Ear or squirral thorax, ( I will try a bit of cdc this season) and touched the top snipe hackles with a tiny tiny amout of gink.

Results were hugely impressive on a brief test when the fishing wasnt easy - i guess the fish see it as easy meat....

In my experience, sunk abdomen emergers such as the Klink have not scored aswell as all the writers would have us believe, but i still tie them.

My best dry results are with Spiders, Griffiths, and JT Olives.

Also, the CDC and Elk opened my eyes last season.

But sunk abdomen emergers do not score as well for me as what the "logic" written by the likes of Bob Wyatt ( whom i respect greatly anyway ) would have me believe.

Incidentallu, i used Timco 103 bl's for the Spiders. The lighter the better....
