Default Czech style?

I have started to really enjoy my short line nymphing now I am a bit more experienced at it and am in the process of choosing a 10' rod to help my line control. Any advice on weights to go for? I currently do most of my fishing with a 4# but am tempted to go down to a 10' 3#.

This is the latest Czech style fly to leave my vice. Hopefully the lead underbody should get it down to the ladies quick enough, beaded versions are on their way.

Hook: TMC 200R size 16
Abdomen: Woven fluorocarbon (6lb fulling mill) coloured with permanent marker and varnished
Thorax: Hares ear and rabbit body
Cover: Thin Skin with SHHAN over the top

Great looking fly Daniel, I'm sure that will prove successful with the ladies !!! As for rods the trend seems to be longer and lighter. I notice the new Streamflex range includes an 11' in a 3 weight, not a length that I can point upwards to release a fish on a lot of the rivers I fish but a nice asset on wide, open waters

Cheers for the comments have now included the dressing.

Think 10' 3# sounds like a good idea, will be catching nought but branches with an 11' I think.

Don't reckon you'd be doing yourself any favours (or the fish) if you hooked 2lb of grayling in 4 foot of heavy water on a 3 weight......or a kelt.

Nice fly BTW. Taking a bit of scruff out the thorax will help it get down a bit quicker.

Hi Daniel,

I have the 10' #3 Streamflex which I use predominantly for french style nymphing with mostly small flies, its also great tool for short line upstream spider fishing.

It would certainly handle larger fish but as North Country Angler mentioned its probably not ideal for winter grayling fishing where river flows are generally stronger and the use of much heavier flies are used to get to the bottom quick.

I think a line rating #4 or #4/5 might be worth considering.

PS. Smart looking fly you tied there, lovely profile.

Mick.

nice & neat wee fly,but i think more weight would be needed to get it down to the depths to reach the grayling, the thorax would probably slow its sink rate down aswell, not a critisicm just a wee pointer for you for next time, craig.

Just a note. Not tried a 3# but a 10' 4# Streamflex will handle absolutely furious carp to 15lbs in fairly short order so it should be OK with any grayling you happen to chance upon. Very good rods Streamflex's.

That nymph is excellent. How much lead did you wind on there?

Has about 10 turns of 0.10 lead wire under the thorax, appreciate the comments guys. I think the beaded version may be the answer with a 2.5mm tungsten bead to pull it down quick.

Hmmmm in a dilemma with the rods now. My current river rod is an 8'6'' 4# streamflex and it has served me really well this season so am happy to stick with the streamflex range. But another 4# or a 3# hmmmmm
Dan
