Thank you for that!!

I wonder what the advantage would be of using deer hair v. the tried and true elk hair?? Any difference??
Thank you

Its nothing to get exited about, its a cdc and elk with an underwing to spread light and less deer hair, just tie in the butt ends of the deer hair and dub cdc over. I like mine with a shuck of Zelon to match the dubbing but some of the folk that use it rip off the shuck, particularly if they are on still waters.
The only comment i would make is i think EP International Trigger Point Fibres should be used as the underwing, its not a uniform colour and i like the effect when viewed from underneath it makes the wing more translucent.... less harsh than a full wing of deer hair, it also makes the thing unsinkable

So far Cinnamon CDC seems to best work best on Lochs size 12 and 14 and Olive Rabbit 14 and 16 on running water, its early doors we only started using it this season.

Mr. Buzz,
What colour(s) of the fiber do you like for this usage? Never used the stuff and the list of choices is rather long. Cheers

C.Caddis is the one i have been using.
It appears to be made of different coloured fibres and is more translucent than poly wing, I fear there is a fuss being made about nothing here TBH, there are lots of flies that would make it into my box as "essential" before this. Ohanzee fishes predominately lochs and i think the appeal is its floatablity and the profile which is the same as the CDC and Elk or F Fly or Wyatts DHS or.......

I get mine here:-

Hey Buzz,
I have read a lot about the EP fibers lately but have not seen any. This thread gives me an excuse to get a pack and play around with it. At the least I will use it like super hair and tie up a box of Jujubee Midges.
thanks for the info

So we are not actually talking about a Sedgehog? What caught my attention was the "using the Sedgehog when things aren't hatching" comment. I've always found the Sedgehog a hatch fly, so I was wondering what difference the underwing made when there is not a hatch.

If the Sedgehog is actually a CDC & Elk/deer, I now understand.

The EP fibres sound interesting though. I've been meaning to play about with poly fibres in some of the Half Hog patterns I use, and EP sounds just the ticket

Anything like the one I tie? I put an "egg sack" on the rear of the fly. I don't use cdc as I like to grease my flies????
