Default Cast Carriers?

I'm looking for a better way to carry my pre-tied leaders, some with droppers attached and some without droppers. I currently coil them individually then put a couple of ties on them to keep them in order.

I've never used the traditional "cast carrier" (disks with notches), but just did some internet research and see that Wheatley and a couple of other companies still make them.

How do you store your pre-tied leaders?

Are cast carriers a good option?

BTW, I see that the Wheatley cast carriers have a magnet in the center. What is that for----a place to put the fly if you have pre-tied flies on the cast?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Bryan

Thumbs up

These are the posh version of lagging and they fit nicely into your waistcoat pockets!
Good with the diff colours so you can tell whats a pre made 3 fly cast or 4 fly cats ect!
The storage box comes in handy for fritz also

i use pole rig winders, however the foam ones look ideal. hook your droppers into it easy. i notice they do jumbo 10 cm ones too. might be good to avoid coiling the leader/ cast too much.

I took the pattern (roughly) of the plastic cast carriers shown at the bottom of this page:
Other Accessories - 20-30% off UK RRP on all fly fishing tackle

Except I make it out strong cardboard. The point fly gets hooked into the hole in the middle with the point of the hook going into the cardboard. As I wind the cast on, the droppers can get hooked anywhere onto the cardboard (can't do that with the plastic version). Finally, I have a slit cut in from the edge of the cardboard and sliding the line end of the cast into that slit is enough to hold it with friction.

Easy to make. Cheap to replace. Very flat so lower volume than the pipe lagging method. Only disadvantage is that they go soggy if you drop them in the water.

I just coil 'em up and pop 'em into plastic CD sleeve wallets. Well cheap a couple of quid for 50 at Asda/Tesco and you can use the extras for your flytying materials.
