Default Off set points ........?

Hi Guys

I read an article a while back where the guy bent his hooks i.e off set the point after a morning of failing to hook up...............Result ?? after lunch he started hooking the fish after fish .................He later stated he now bends his hooks before he ties them.

Just wondered what your views where on this ???????

I have to say i was very impressed with the hook up rate when i started using Knapek barbless hook "superb" hook ups ...........thinking on it Knapek use what they call "Eagle claw" i believe which in effect is an off set point !

I take the offset of my fly hooks.as I think it makes the flies spin.

They used to be quite popular in the 70's, called Kirbed or reversed I think.

Yes, a 'Kirbed' or Kirby hook point is offset to the left, a straight point has no offset and a reversed point is offset to the right.

My father used them a lot on a dropper, in the late '60s and to great effect, he said.

I use offset hooks when beach casting, I think they do give a better hook up.

But when it comes to fly fishing I agree with 3lb grayling, I think the flies tend to spin and twist the line to a degree. So I do not use them as I think this disadvantage outweighs the hook up advantage.

A member on here, Davidms, first mentioned these to me some years ago, said he wont use anything else now as his catch rate had improved dramatically.
When I was a lad, most of the fishing I did then was with an off set hook, that was about all you could buy then.
Funnily enough I came accross some a month or two ago, can't remember who's make they are, but I am giving them a try next season.
I have offset a few in the vice after Davids advice, and they did hook up well, and I can honestly say they didn't cause a spinning problem for me.

All the grub hooks I use have the offset removed.

Hi Guys

I think there Off set and then theres "off set" if that makes any sense

If you take a look at the link below, the moving image shows Knapeks "Eagle Claw" point which is clearly off set.......... but not massively off set.

I've been wondering if thats why i get such good hook ups with Knapeks ??
