Default At what point is your addiction taking hold?

You've started fly fishing and become relatively successful, and realise its time to start tying your own flies. You buy a vice or vise if your American, bobbin holder, hackle pliers, scissors etc. You look to materials.....peacock herls a must, pheasant tail, the odd indian cape, marabou in a few colours...olive, orange, black and white. Okay, thats four, but who's counting! You buy some capes, perhaps indian to start with, in ginger (red game) and black. That will cover a multitude of flies. You need some synthetics...oval gold and silver and pearl mylar for sure. A good few threads in various colours, black being the prime colour. See, there's no need for fly tying kits!! It's all coming back! A good start!

When does it start taking hold though?
Are you in the supermarket looking at the packaging perhaps containing crisps and wondering whether your buzzers would definately be improved with dorito's red cheeks? Maybe its B & Q when you spot those lovely red reels of bead chain eyes! Maybe your visiting a friends house with your girlfriend/wife when you spot that lush olive carpet that might just do the business on your Damsel nymphs...rub, rub, rub with the rubber soles to get a wad whilst you nod and be polite in the company, all the time thinking, what rib will I use to embellish this lovely olive Christmas shopping. look at all the possibilites!! Beads, tinsels, glitter, all the flash and then some!

Perhaps your looking at some gorgeous curvy brunette standing before you in the queue to the till, when suddenly you spot her scarf has that deep blue tinsel that you can't source! Its difficult.....your eyes flash between her tight jeans enveloping her curvy ass and that scarf with that deep blue tinsel, which like her ass you'd love to get your hands on!!!

At what point did you know you were totally addicted?

If this seems sexist in any way to female flyfisherladys I apologise, Im a man, enough said, eh!

Addicted? what are you talking about man?? I've only been fly tying 2 weeks and I've only spent £250 on equpment and materials and waiting for another 2 orders of over £50 each of materials and now i'm negotiating a loan from the bank and considering selling some body parts (my own) to make up the deficite. My bedroom floor looks like a barbers shop on a hippy 50% off day and I'm building a cage in the field behind the house to keep a turkey, pair of pheasants/partridges, one moose, a stoat and a roe deer and maybe a goat and a couple of mallards. I pray every night to god that he will make me a better person and not to let me suffer if times get hard and to please try and get the mother in law to buy me those hen capes for xmas.

Got the idea in my head recently that a visit to Hobbycraft was needed to search for the ultimate red thread for Red Tag tails; decided to try to do this whilst in a rush to be at an appointment, so arrive in a stress inducing 'shopping mall' car park, due to changes in store profiles, it's always overly full with folks circling the block.

Any normal person would have just driven straight on but no, STD's fly tying devil whispers in the ear ... you must get the thread, so against my usual and normal law abiding demeanor, I opted for a non legit parking spot half on kerb and road, with hazards on as a half arsed excuse - £45 'surcharge' on a couple of quid thread pack.

Watch it folks, it's like the black goo in Spiderman Three ... next I'll find myself breaking into a museum in pursuit of historic feathers ... or has that been done already .

The true test is whether you'll pick up a long dead badger with a view to skinning it. My mate did so and nearly got divorced. The badger skin moved from his back porch to the far end of the garden and finally got burnt in the woods.
I guess he just wasn't sufficently hooked! I'm still working my way up to large animals but admit to stopping and collecting squirrels and the like.

Dunno, but many, many years ago, I used to pay regular visits to the London Zoo where they had a dozen or more un-caged Macaws that spent their lives sitting on big perches, being generally pampered and fed by the general public... Following my visits, one or two of them always finished up a tail feather or so short

Default You know you're in trouble when;

You have scissors and zip-lock bags in the car in case you see a fresh badger / fox. You also have bigger bags for rabbit, hare and birds.

You watch squirrels on your bird feeder and think that it’s probably about time you bought an airgun.

You encourage you daughter that she really wants a chinchilla / hamster / guinea pig, anything that looks a bit furry.

You actually want to go to zoo’s and country parks, just in case the peacocks are molting.

You can identify at least 10 different shades of olive by name.

You can walk into Hobbycraft and know which aisle those stacking pots for hooks are on without asking.

When asked what you did last Saturday by the wife you contemplate saying you spent the afternoon in the red light district rather than telling the truth and say you went to a fly tying demonstration, because she would think it was less sad.

Mate of mine picked up a "dead" badger from the road side.
Parked his car and went to get the keys for his lock up to deal with the badger there.
Upon return to the said car he found the badger in the front seat ripping out his dash. It had dug through the back seat and **** everywhere.

Try putting that in your insurance claim form
