Default hook for bead advice please

Just started to tie a batch of small bugs and found that new hooks.....Fulling Mill 31530 competition heavyweight size 16....won't allow 2mm bead around bend.

Before I re-order.can anyone confirm that Kamasan 170 will allow 2mm bead around size 16 or even 18? If not any other model advised?

many Thanks Peter

PS just dug out old supply of Partridge Captain Hamilton Wet hooks in #16.....they take bead but about 60% of points break off when de-barbing!

you may not be using the right bead for that hook size

5/64″ (2.0mm) for Hook Sizes #18 to #22
3/32″ (2.4mm) for Hook Sizes #16 to #18
7/64″ (2.8mm) for Hook Sizes #14 to #16
1/8″ (3.2mm) for Hook Sizes #12 to #14
5/32″ (4.0mm) for Hook Sizes #8 to #10
3/16″ (4.8mm) for Hook Sizes #4 to #6

Thanks for the reply. I agree that there is a relationship between bead size and hook size. However in this case the problem is that this particular hook will not take a bead of any size, because of the shape of the bend.....quite sharp rather than round (I'm still not sure what a sproat is....).

Hence my question about hook bend shape and the B170 (since looked at catalogue and 405 also looks to have a nice round bend).

Many Thanks, Peter

I bought some 4mm gold beads and tried kamasan b175 size 10 hooks, but they would'nt fit so tried some fulling mill competition heavyweight size 10 and they fit a treat.

I know that you can get beads with a slit in them so they can slide onto the hook rather than having to put them on at the end. I think someone posted on here somewhere about them but I can't remember where?

r ian, yes you are correct....I've just tried some 4mm on size 10 B175 and they don't go.

Also tried the 2mm in some size 16 B100 and this worked a treat. Not the shape I wanted but I'm sure the grayling won't mind.

Wingman, I think Hanak do the ones with slits.....but the ones I have are not slitted, hence need to find hook.

Thanks for all the replies, Regards Peter
