Default which whip finishing tool?

Can anyone recommend a good easy to use whip finishing tool as there seems to be many variations. I bought the one that turrel do and it was terrible to use, thread kept slipping off the end while I was doing the turns and I ended up chopping a cm off the end and reshaping it so it works a bit better but its not great. I have always been a double half hitch kind of guy but thought I'd have a go with the WF tool. Anyone know of a good'n please let me know. Thanks.

Mark

Mark, if you go to The FDG & check out the branches section you'll find one in Cumbria. Contatact the secretary & go along, then you can try out several different types from various members there. It has some world class fly dressers in that branch, so you won't be wasting your time.

Personally I use fingers & always have, I can whip finish blindfold as it's so easy & have demo'd it many times at various game fairs & the like.

Matarelli is the best, simple and easy to use. On top of that is also very very simple to manufacture it yourself. Just take a 15 cm piece of 2mm thick wiire, use a round tip pliers (the one also used in making rigs, rings, spinnerbaits rigs, etcetc...) and that is all...Drill a 2 mm hole into a pencil thick piece of wood , a drom of superglue and you have the tool. You can also use a piece of glasspaper to taper the tip of the tool, then use a very fine grit sandpaper and a thick cotton cloth to finnish the surface.
You can buy one ofcourse, is cheap, but making yourself have an advantage, you can ake it by your own needs...for streamers you can make a larger one, for a bigger triangle while whipping thread... Also, i find the tube mobile handle uncomfortable, using the wood piece of rod you have a fixed handle much better control with that.

Yes Parintele that would be my only concern with the matarelli, the revolving bit as i like things to be fixed because its more predictable, apart from that it looks an excellent little wf tool. I dont suppose you have any photos of your contraption so I can see exactly what you mean in a pictorial sense so to speak, it would be a great help, thanks.

Echo Arkle's comments try as many as you can until you find a tool that feeld comfortable.

However alot of guys reckon to do without.

Learn without and go from there.
