Default Dubbing Twirler

Hi all - can anyone tell me where i can get a dubbing twirler? I want to tie GRHEs (my only experience to date has been buzzers and baby dolls - with a few weird and wonderful inventions of my own). I've looked on flea bay and put in a general search with no luck. any help appreciated.

Hi Greyhoundgirl

You dont need a dubbin twirler for a GRHE just spin the fur on by hand. You only really need a dubbin twister if you have a biggish body you want to build up, big nymphs or lures with dubbed bodies. Far easier to dub by hand and quicker.

I dont have a dubbing twister, I use hackle pliers attached to the bottom of the loop to spin the dubbing if I need to, seems to work well enough for me, I can't honestly see a reason to buy an extra bit of kit for that job.

Otherwise, simply use the split thread method. You split the thread with you bodkin tool, open it out, and pack the dubbing between the two splits, when you have enough, release the two splits, spin the bobben so that it twists up the dubbing again, and wrap it on... no need to buy a twister. they are cumbersome and redundant with modern threads. There are of course some applications where a twister is required, but for GRHE's, you dont need it.

Thanks guys - i've thought through what you've said - and it all seems to work as far as i can see - though i do find all this stuff a bit confusing as a newcomer. I've looked at the basic instructions in diagrams in my book. its using the twister at steps 3/4 and then changes to hackle plier at 6, to wind on the rope. so, as you say, the hackle plier can be used from 3 - 5! thats great - i havent yet bought the twister
thanks again

If you must, then for heavens sake buy a dubbing twister, they are only a couple of quid anyway and a very simple tool. However I doubte very much you will ever use it again after the pattern tied from that book. Infact throw that book away, it sounds most confusing, instead look up on the internet how to dub a fly body. Its quite straight forward, simply take a very small amount of dubbing material (hares ear in this case), place it on the thread you attached to the hook and simply, roll or twist the thread (in one direction only) using forfinger and thumb, the dubbing should adhere to the thread. If it doesn't you might need to apply some sticky dubbing wax, this will help with adhension, alternatively your applying too much dubbin. Build up a nice body by applying or removing dubbing as you wrap forward, forming the bodyshape, simple. As I say see a movie clip or read about it on the net, there must be hundereds of references to this technique. Good luck.
