Default The modern Classic, Your opinion!

There isn't much in fly fishing thats entirely new but what fly has been created in the last 15yrs that has shown a difference and is truly a modern classic not purely a variation on an old theme. What gets your vote....apps, okay d's, norskys....

I hate it and never use it but the booby seems to be one off the most popular flies.

As someone who left the sport from about 1990-2009 I've looked into what's hot in the world of modern fly tying.
I reckon that apart from a few new materials allowing ultra-realistic but ultimately time-consuming & maybe futile natural imitations, very little indeed has changed.

Most killing lures still revolve around variations on weighted heads/bodies & marabou. Dog nobblers in other words.

Popular nymphs are still GRHE, PTN or a basic wingless wet like a DB or Cruncher.
One change is the use of varnished skinny buzzers, which I don't recall being promoted at all before 1990 & I used to read the monthlies voraciously back then.

Dries have changed little apart from the profusion of CDC, which itself was first used over 100 years ago.

Wets now have "evolved" back towards old trad Irish loch-type patterns such as Dabblers, Bumbles & so on.

In other words, surprisingly little has changed!

I think that Steve is pretty much right in what he is saying.
The only main changes in flies are the use of modern materials to make changes to a lot of classic flies.

Phil White's Stonefly is a contender.

1 - new anatomy
2 - depending on size and colours can imitate many stonefly species
3 - it is very effective

Ah, now voices from the gallery.....not familiar with the stone fly nymph but I believe you....elaborate.. The Blob, chickenfish, well i'd forgotten all about that! Yip its a modern classic. We have one regardless of the controversy! That'll never disappear. Personally, I'd say the Okay D... Neither a buzzer or a lure, but somewhere in that grey area. I hate to say this, really I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What about the Dancer? It should be called Macbeth after the Scottish play! I personally, just don't get the Dancer fly..... It works, too many jocks swear by it! All I can say is that its a wooly ******. If thats at the forefront of lure production, then what other combinations have we missed
