That's not a fly!

Sniper, take a look here:

Charlie's FlyBox - Colorado's Best FlyShop and online Fly Tying Tutorials

Charlie's FlyBox - Colorado's Best FlyShop and online Fly Tying Tutorials

A couple of classic flies for both river and still (you should tell us what sort of fishing you do) and very good SBSs. I'd also recommend his book which is basically a compilation of lessons via flies which get more complex and build on earlier techniques. If you can tie the flies in his book well, there's nothing you won't be able to tie well.

Hi Sniper,

As mentioned above Charlie Craven has a great book and web site. He is also a very nice guy and very well respected.
Give youTube a try, start with doing a search for Davie McPhail, he demonstrates both of the flies listed above and its free. YouTube - DavieMcPhail's Channel

Do it, pheasant-tails, crunchers, and DBs are a good place to start. Peacock herl, and the obvious, are all you need to start with.

I'm 51 now, and started tying a month ago.

Careful though, highly addictive.

Ditch the tools and don't start tying.

It will cost you a fortune and if you are married will cause rows and make you exceedingly unpopular with the rest of your family and friends apart from us lot of nuts.

Thanks for the advise everyone. Sorry Ive not replied earlier but Ive been away. I thought long and hard about starting and decided what have I got to loose. I am going to give the Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear in one of the videos which was recommended. What tools do I need. I have a bobbin threader, a whip finisher, a bodkin half hitch tool and some fine point tying scissors. Will I need anything else??

OK I need help!!
Having thought about it I am going to try tying some Pheasant tail nymphs and want to do this in size 14. Choosing the hook is a minefield. Can anyone help me out with this. I only want about 10 hooks so that I can give it ago over Christmas. Where can I get the right ones for this fly. Hope you can help as I need to order them and have them delivered b4 Christmas and RM is a nightmare at the moment
