Default Splitting thread for dubbing loop

I'm starting to use more and more cdc in my tyings but tend to find my threads a bit unwilling to split in the middle to allow for the formation of dubbing loops.

Which brand / size thread lends itself well to this technique.

I'm guessing some of the hends ones as a lot of Czech etc fly tyers use this?

Phil ( Spidersplus ) , you might have some useful experience on this front?

Tks

Powersilk splits very well, and I also use a lot of UTC 70 which splits quite well if you careful.

Tks Rover, havent had too much success with either and thought i was missing a trick. Might need a finer needle.

Hi Spider. Power silk works fine for me. MP has a thread that is very easy to split in a range of colours. For finer threads 14/0 sheer splits easily. I just use fine stitching needles. Perhaps your problem is that you are cording the thread while tying which makes it impossible to split.

Most multi strand threads should split easily...the key as bill d mentioned is to make sure you un-twist the thread before attempting it. It is pretty good practise to get into a habit of doing this as you go along anyway.

I find UTC 70 works fine if you do this and get you finger behind it to help flatten the thread out.

Sabsman.

Why split the thread, just use a dubbing twister.

You split the thread when you need to keep to keep the body nice and slim and avoid the thread build up you get when creating a traditional dubbing loop.

Marc Pettijean does a special needle for this purpose & he also has his own thread "designed" for the same.

The thread looks identical to Danville's 6/0 & the needle is basically a small flattened ball ended sewing machine type needle set into a 3.5mm tubular mandrel. (& of course they're priced like all his stuff !)

A bodkin does the trick. Griffiths Sheer splits well also. Any un-bonded thread will.
