Default First attempt at wings.

Discovered some primaries tucked away in the kit, so thought I'd have a go.

Fly number 50.

The rest of the fly is a mess, but the wings came out OK,ish.

Nice fly, try a smaller hackle next time. Try winging first by tying a standard wet fly, tail, rib and seals fur body, then apply the wing and hackle last. Applying wings round a hackle like that is difficult particularly if you don't get the slips tight together and as close to the hook shank as possible.

If you want a step by step look here for a wickhams fancy like that. UKFlyDressing - Wickhams Fancy Wet Fly

Stop being so hard on yourself Mike, it'll catch fish, and the wings look good.

Not bad at all for your first atempt, as roll cast said try a simpler fly such as a blae and black as there is no body hackle. The wickhams can be a hard fly to get right.

As Mrtrout says, stop putting yourself down.
For a first attempt it is excellent.
Also as Rollcast has pointed out, try tying patterns that don't require a great deal of hackling, until you get the hang of it.
I still can't tie wings very well, although I don't tend to get a lot of practice with them.

Keep at it

Default Well done!

That's really good. First attempt-I don't believe you. The secret with paired wings is to really get the hang of the "Pinch and Loop". You want to be tightening b pulling a loop upwards. This gives you time to control where the wings are moving. You can also after the initial loop leave the bobbin dangling, stand and take a look and reposition again. You have paired the wings really nicely though and that's half the battle.

Yeah,

Damned good looking wings, especially on a full-hackled fly as others have already pointed out. You can wet your finger and stroke down the hackles on the back of the fly, they will eventually realign themselves once the wing is done.

Good stuff,

Andy

I'm lacking ingredients, and some sharp scissors, but here goes.

No.52., a little less going on.
