I would imagine they were cock hackle points, probably from a neck.
Was it a spinner pattern?

it was a spinner type fly but the points were only 5mm or so, it was a tidy little fly. the reason i ask is that the finished wings were quite rounded in appearance and i am looking at the tips of the capes i have and cant seem to match the shape?? i really should spend more time talking about tying rather than the fishing
cheers for the help, jon.

Have a look at the large hackles at the bottom end of a Chinese or Indian cock cape. The tips of those are rounded and ideal for wings.

The larger hackles on genetic cock capes tend to be pointed, as also are genetic saddle hackles.

Genetic hen capes also have large round tipped hackles at the bottom. The tips of these have all the gloss and translucency of cock hackles.

I'd go for hackle tips...an upwinged olive pattern...similar to the Adams Irresistible...Google the aforementioed fly and see if it fits the bill.

Yes, he's already asking about hackle tips, we know that already, OK? However, he is asking about hackle tip wings for spinners, not upwing olives, is that clear?

Ermm, yes hackle tips as in original post, but which hackle tips? Take a look at my post just above yours. YAAAAAAAWN!

Anyway here's a vid of the irrelevant fly just out of interest and with pointy up wings.
