Default Shield bugs, The result

Thanks to Mr McPhail I finally came up with a Shiled bug that seems to be pretty close.
This one is tied with "Tiger Beetle Green" Loco foam which is very easy to work with.

Looks great, I was imagining pictures of trout alongside the fly when I read the thread subject. I'm sure you'll be able to add some later though

Is the green only on the top? (it looks like it from the images) If so there doesn't seem much point in it as the fish won't see it. I like the style for a general beetle pattern though.

The green is only on the top, but there again the green is only on the top of the natural insect too. If you think how these things end up in the water they are often drowned with wings out and upside down, Considering this plus knowing refraction from the meniscus will show the edges of the colour, I'm happy that the colour is needed.
Whether it really makes a difference is a matter of opinion but it gives me confidence which makes the fly a better fly as i know I'll fish it better.

I also tied some in the "Oil Slick " a silvery blueish green colour and that looks good too.

Cheers

Nicley done Chris. One of those patterns I often don't use but handy to have one or two in the box just incase local conditions dictate.

Love it

Fair enough. I wasn't having a go just wondering. Maybe do some with the gree on the the bottom and see which the fish prefer?

I know you weren't having a go, it was a good question which often doesn't get asked.
I thought of tying then with the foam upside down but given the amonut of dubbing and hackle, very little will be visible and with the silhouette effect may not show as obviously "green" as you'd think.

This time next year I may have an answer for you but as we had agood frost last night I expect Shield bugs to be in very short supply from now on.

Cheers
