Actually you can tie almost any pattern on a tube, the main thing I've found is you have to remember these have to be (in the main) 'tied in the round.' That can be 'self limiting' on your choice of patterns. A few that (come immediately to mind) which work very well on tubes (Atlantic Salmon flies) are the Willie Gunn, Cascades and Flamethrowers. That said, there are a few very good books on tube fly construction 'out there' that are very instructive in teaching a 'newbie' how the process works.

Edit: One other option to using the traditional 'tube' is to tie these on Waddington Shanks; works a treat in my humble opinion.
