Here is a great step by step by Midlander. Will help you understand how to do it. A basic step by step for dyeing fly tying materials. Good luck

All the advice above I suppose will be okay.
However, purchase a bottle of Acetic Acid 33% solution from you local chemist.Cost around £5.00.

If you are dying Jungle cock ocelli or nails, whatever you wish to call them;leave the feathers on the skin.
After de-greasing, place in a shallow bowl filled with a neat solution of 33% acetic acid.
The reason being: the feathers and skin will "suck" in the acetic acid, your mordant.
Thereafter, when placed in the dye bath which already has your mordant and dye in, the dye will fix super-fast, and be far more colourfast too.
You can always pour the acetic acid from the shallow bowl back into the acetic acid bottle for future use.
Many people mess-up while dying Jungle cock.Always move the materials in the dye bath.If you have to leave cape in the bath, just use an old fork and balance against the side of your pot, with the tines on the cape. This prevents the cape floating.

As opposed to the white vinegar one would normally use?

Yes Steve, just a much stronger solution the the bog standard stuff you throw on your chips.
It is strong, so read the warnings on the packaging or bottle.

Let alone the health of the hackles. The distilled malt vinegar I use has 5% acidity and works just fine on a broad range of materials. 1 tablespoon per litre of water (preferably distilled or at worst filtered)
