Many lower grade capes already have split or partially split feathers - otherwise a sharp scalpel should do the trick. You merely need to nick the point of the feather and gently ease apart with your fingers (nails come in handy in these situations).

I usually pull off whole feather, 'pin' down eye in the middle with a fine needle then pull the feather. This splits the eye which you can tease apart with your fingers.
Hope this helps.

Does this work with all the larger eyes (cheeks ),I find that the base of the split feather is a lot wider than the smaller stripped stems and makes for a very large head to tie in .Maybe and very possibly I am doing it all wrong .
