Default Spanflex/Flexi~Floss

Hi everyone

When tying apps worms i use both of the above materials, this thread is not a 'which is better' - i use both, and the both work well.

However i have noticed with wapsi spanflex sometimes your get the poker straight lengths that i would consider proper spanflex - however sometimes i get completely different material in the same wapsi packaging, far more like flexi floss than the usual.

Anyone know why this is?

Cheers!

Yes. Wapsi, in their infinate wisdom, have changed their supplier, and the new product is inferior to the old - seriously inferior. The 'poker straight' lenghts are the old stock (some of which is still floating around in the shops) and the curly, weak, frays as soon as you look at it, stuff is the new stock. Still charging the same though for a seriously sh!t product.

I urge anyone that dislikes a product or change to a product should inform the company. If we don't b!tch they won't know...
Scratch, thanks for that bit of info, I will go and see if I can see whats what. Most of my stuff is from HareLine or Uni, never tried the Wapsi.

Don't use the Waspi for worms as it's a tadge thin.

Had this discussion on the way down to Chew....{ Hi G }.

You'll catch on both but i think i'll stick with the creators { Peter Appleby } recipe....... flexi floss.

I'm not sure there's any great debate, Superfly. What I would say is that they are two outwardly similar products, but with distinctly different properties... a bit like cock and hen hackles. I can therefore see Fred's logic in chosing Flexifloss (softer) over Spanflex (stiffer) for the worm.

Should I ever decide to tie such a wretched device, I'll compare the two products and let you know my findings

As Rob knows from a couple or so years ago at the BFFI, I avoid Spanflex as (for me) it has/had a tendency to rot & go stiff & then break. I did point him towards a supplier who was selling some off at a good price. But that supplier only now trades in his native France as his cancer has flared up again. It used to be, Spanflex = Spandex & Flexi-floss = Lycra. but I suppose that 1 of the bright sparks in accounts found a cheaper source etc.

Not when you stretch it to within an inch of it's life, wrap it around a hook and coat it with three layers of Sally!

I've always found Spanflex to be far superior strength-wise, John, and no matter how hard one tries, it's practically impossible to get it to fray or split. Perfect for the way that use it.... well, it used to be... until, as you say, the bean counters took over. It's happening everywhere... seen any metal bits on a Minn Kota lately?

Will you be hanging around the burger van at the show again this year John?

I've emailed Wapsi three different times about this and got no replies at all. Little difference between Wapsi's new stuff and Veniards. If you find any shops that stock the old straight material, buy what you can!!!!!!!!!
