Default Human hair

I know this may sound crazy but when I was getting my hair cut today, a thought came accross me.

Would human hair be useful for fly tying???

Anyone out there tried it, i may try it tonight. What are your thoughts on this.

I had exactly the same thought earlier while having my haircut too. Will be interesting to see what others think. If you do try it be sure to post a photo

I'm not sure what you would want to tie with human hair. It isn't fur, so dosnt have the downy fluff that animal fur has, so you cant dub with it.. You cant spin it like deer hair, as it's too thin, and it would be useless for mayfly tails, as it isnt rigid enough. I guess you would have to simply try it and see what you can come up with.

Dont know about hair.
Belly button fluff may be a wonderfully discusting dubbing, and your Pee is great for fixing natural dyes. You can even colour it with the right foods to give a nice bright yellow or orange tinge!

What the old public stuff?

Yep once knicked some strays from the shower and added some to a hares ear pattern but had no discernable difference to the fish!

Quite a number of years ago, I was asked by a young lady to tie a "traditional" style salmon fly as a birthday present for her (yuppie) fishing mad boyfriend. She supplied the "sample" & I managed to build it into the wing quite successfully.

Human (head ) hair is one of the few hair fibres with no real taper (one of the few other examples is horse main/tale).

As a result any fly would look nasty and spikey.

Now the hair from your moulting mutt...that's another matter....great for wee gold heads

Not crazy, just silly We often see this type question... "Can I use knicker elastic, tin foil, and my dogs pubes for fly tying?" The answer is yes, you can... there ain't no law against it - go right ahead. But when your Mrs is on the war-path, and you're fed up of being bitten by the dog, try Spanflex, silver tinsel, and seals fur... they seem to have caught on.

Human hair has no particularly attractive/useful characteristics for fly tying. That's why nobody ties with it. Stick to the fur/hair from cute furry creatures.. that's what they're there for.

I have a pattern that I tied using my own pubes. It doesn't float very well and causes line-twizzle to death when I false cast. But it caught a few grayling.

Did you pull them out first or are they still attached?
