Default Bobbin holders

I want to invest in some decent bobbin holders. Those i have were cheap to buy (from the french guy at the bffi) and seem to grip the bobbin far to tight so thread does not 'flow' as i wind. Any recommendations guys?? Looking at the many on offer there is a huge spread of prices

Hi Caster,
I use griffin bobbin holders with the ceramic lining and have not had any problems.

I use Stonfo and have had no problems with them. They do 2 sizes one for small bobbins and one for the normal size bobbin. I would also suggest getting the threader to go with them as they are slightly thinner and longer then the average holder. I switched to Stonfo after a disaster with the stonefly bobbin holders.

Company Website:Stonfo - High quality fishing tackle manufacturer

WHo i purchased mine from: eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Hope this helps
Regards
Ian

If the bobbin holders are the type that grip the bobbin between sprung legs, you could try stretching them apart slightly, to ease the grip on the bobbin.

That "French guy at the BFFI" is unlikely to be able to come over again as his cancer has flared up again. I've tried contacting him via email, but to no avail. The Indian end of his operation is still running, but it's trade only.

Ditto griffin, there are two sizes/types, both with the tubes fully ceramic lined, and the pack includes a basic spool threader. About £10

I have used the griffin bobbin holders, they are very strong .

my favourite one so far is the tmc ceramic one, very good quality & comfortable to use

My favourite holders are the automatic bobbin holder from nor-vise, Rite-bobbins and the tmc ceramic.

John.

Like Whitegoatie suggests, just try stretching the legs apart, (oooo errrr missis!).
Seriously tho, to fit "normal" wide spools, all sprung leg holders need stretching apart to lessen the tension on the thread. So for now, don't think you need to invest in "decent", (rip off, like most of the fly tying products industry!), bobbin holders till you have tried stretching first! Just don't waste your money unnecessarily. Ceramic lined are best, but Veniards version is very decent and a fraction of the price of some of the more trendy, over designed, over priced idiot catching products that are presently infesting the market.
Your bobbin holders probably ARE already decent for what you need!

I agree, the ceramic ones are they best,

I bought the Veniards one, with my one the ceramic insert kept falling out, I had to epoxy it in.
The legs are really easy to adjust, cheap & cheerful!
