partridge skins

Ihave always tied using feathers from packs but now I want to progress to buyng a full skin.I have had a look about and am a little confused as to which type to get.I have seen adverts for English,Chinese and Hungarian skins and also for male and female skins.What do the forum members reckommend?

Call CooksHill they will sort you out. Cookshill Fly Tying Materials I use hackles from what I can get over here, less of a selection. I am partial to English, French and Hungarian. I recently got some French and English dyed with picric acid, makes lovely flies.
But it really comes down to the flies your tying, list what your tying and the others will be along to give you lots of advise.

i thought English and hungarian partridge wer the same..
i got a load of picric partridge you should of said mate
blimey you'll have to tye with it at night out there.. unless you want it golden olive

They could be the same... maybe just labeled differently? Marketing stuff? They look very similar to our gray partridge as well. Same original stock? Its been years since university.
I only get packaged hackles, no full skins yet. So I am not sure...
Tye at night? Sun fading it? or reacting with? Sun fades everything here, 'cept for me.

English Partridge and Hungarian Partridge are the same - the term Hungarian is used by the Americans, The proper name for them is Grey Partridge.

Chinese Partridge are the same species but a smaller sub species.

English Partridge are bigger and better marked.

Cookshill is cleaned out of all Partridge skins at the moment - but that will change soon

If you have the stomach for it, get a couple from the butcher and skin them. I did it years ago. Cost me about £2.50 a bird. A bit vicks vapour rub under your nose is recommended though. You can then half the skins and do a bit dying to get 4.

I found the packet hackles were too big to for some flies I want to tie,soft hackles, partridge and orange etc in smaller sizes.Will also use them for legs etc.

So for general use I would best get an English/Hungarian skin yes?
