Default Cdcs

The Cdcs I've tied with plastic Netty bags that you get fruit and veg in, there are about 8 different colours also I have brushed the bodies with 2 coats of Veniard No1 varnish.
I have also tied 5 plumes of natural Cdc with the stalks left in each fly, as I've been fishing them in rough water and catching fish, but on the whole I've fished 2, 1, gold holographic material body with olive thorax, and 1, black body with a silver rib and fluorescent red thorax, over the last 4 months these 2 patterns have not failed even if I've missed or lost the fish, my hook size are 10s.
One last thing which may be controversial is I Gink the Cdc with a drop of Gehrke'ss Gink then when I catch a fish I wash it then dry it with a PAPER TOWEL all the lads where I fish do this as the fishes slime doesn't cover the ginked part and wipe the fly on the towel like a paint brush it's a very fast way of drying your fly. The fly is only ginked once when you start.

Lovely patterns Robie, they look real killers, there is nothing wrong in applying Gink to the CDC i often put a bit of gink on the cdc it re conditions it.

Have you tried doing a body with starling wing quill? Strip the wing quill and steep it in warm water for 10 minutes, the quill becomes soft and the segment effect is great.Wait until the quills dries a bit it usually tightens up on the hook. 2 coats of no1 varnish to seal the quill and hey presto a footballer type shuttlecock.

The general consensus is that most floatants are a bad thing on CDC...

the reason for CDC's excellent floating characteristics is its structure

adding floatants will simply clump the barbules together and be inhibitory to flotation... if you really have to add a floatant the a merest wipe of a CDC oil or the grease from your nose is all you should ever consider using

YMMV

Personally, I watershed CDC. As icky says, its the structure which causes the fly to float. A piece of amadou will absorb the water from the feather failing that a wee bit of chamois is the business. As far as fish slime goes I'd tie another one on. Klinkhammers for me are a much better alternative and with a white wing post will let you see the fly clearly in dark water where the cdc will give you a hard time. Tie a couple in your fave colours and materials and you won't look back.

Thanks lads for your remarks, laurie I will try that with the wing quill.
ickypimp I tried your method with no Gink in a 1 foot swell it lasted 10 mins before it was swamped soaked right through took about 10mins to dry it out, so I Ginked one up which lasted about 20 mins and dried it in 3 mins.
ickypimp I was like you I thought that ginking was a no no you could say that the lads at Tunstall educated me.
syphogenic thanks.
I Must apologize the 3 golden olive and yellow pearl not ribbed is a material not from the netty bags.

Thanks for your kind remarks.
