Default Tying scissors-sharpening ?

Do any of you sharpen your tying scissors? Seems such a waste to simply bin them and buy more. Just looking at mine and they are working ok but look like a little tlc wouldn't go amiss. I know if you get the angle wrong they will be worse than when you started. So I'm a bit reluctant to mess around with them.

However with a little encouragement ...

Are there special sharpeners that work? I use 800 grade wet and dry to sharpen my knives. Once the blade has grown used to this method of sharpening they become razor sharp. Considering giving the scissors a few strokes? Any ideas guys?

Thanks in anticipation.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have sharpened mine a number of times using the flat face of a diamond hook sharpener - freehand....seems to work very well

Have a go Chris is what I say, and if it works, great, let us know, and if it ruins them, also let us know, and we won't try it.
I have sharpened many chisels in my time, and usually use a preset angle guide, as I am not a naturally good sharpener of chisels etc.
I would have thought one of the flat Diamond type sharpening stones would be good for scissors, it's just keeping the angle right each stroke.
Good luck.
S.

Contact your local hairdressers.
My sister in law had a salon for many years and she sent the scissors off to be done. A small charge for each pair and no hassle.

If they're ones with a micro-serrated blade(s) then you will probably find it a waste of time & may need to send them to a specialist. That will probably cost nearly as much as a new pair by the time you take 2 lots of postage into consideration.

It depends on how much they cost to start with & how long you've had/used them for. Tungsten scissors can be another ball game as they fall into 3 camps, 1. with inserts, 2. tung plated & 3 solid tung. the 2nd ones aren't worth it as you remove the hard finish & end up with a fairly soft base metal (usually).

Taking metal away is not the only thing you need to consider, the "set" of the blades is at least as important & there aren't that many people who can re-set small scissors well. There's a guy I know who's used to doing it & doing it properly. He supplies surgical instruments & re-conditions scissors to standards far better than most factory fresh models. If you're interested p.m. me for his contact details.

I've just bought a new pair of Doc Slicks, my last ones did me for more than 20 years although I never cut anything else than feathers and soft materials with them, I'll be using the old ones now for wires and tinsels etc and my new Doc's for feathers only, nice to get a new pair of scissors every now and then
