Get to my side of the Pond and I'll intro you to the North Umpqa. Most of the river bottom is highly polished flat lava rock that's harder than hell. Cleated boots just slide off.
Took one 'plunge' last year just trying to take a short step (wading staff had already been placed for additional support). Bottom had a slight up-slope and as I lifted one foot, the cleats on the other gave up what ever little grip they had. Flat down on my face in 2' of water one second later..........
"Wet wading" at the time (in a swim suit), so no real harm done ..... save for the local Flora and Fauna learned a few new words.
