Airflo floating clear ridge line 7/8wt
Airflo floating clear ridge line 7/8wt

Default Airflo floating clear ridge line 7/8wt

Airflo floating clear ridge line 7/8wt is a resonable line overall.

I like a heavier line 7/8 rating as it cuts the breeze better then say a standard 7wt. The head on this line is heavy and once loaded up casts a long way. The profile of the line was good with no hinging effect and the running line was thinker than some lines these days, so if feels like a trout line and you are Not fishing with mono which seems to be trend these days (thin running lines).

In my option its a good line to be used on windy days/or a slight breeze and good for buzzer fishing , basing takes on pure feel. The line is not quite as good as the ridge supple line in flat calm (comparing straightness on the water) but certianly very usable. To clarify furthur the nylon core puts slight kinks into the line, so in flat calm you get the z effect very slightly i might add, so with a light breeze it gets rid of that. The plus of a stiffer core is distance you can cast further than a softer core floating line. It can cast a long way easily and has good turn over power to the flies.

The clear option well I must say i can fish the top dropper alot closer than i normally would. So yeah it works. Will it dramatically increase the catch rate time will tell. I would say this line is great for buzzers as the profile in the water for floating line is low , a plus as the wind doesnt catch it as much as a high floating line.

Cons if any the 7/8 makes a bigger splash landing in the water than standard 7 wt so for drys probably opt for a lighter wt line. the line squeaks in the eyes if too dry which is annoying but a wet landing net and thats gone. I mostly cast out a landing net anyway so not a issue for me but for bank anglers...maybe. you also cannt tell how far away the end of the fly is at th end of a retreieve which again is a small negative for some people. After using this line for a day or so you get used the feel of the profile and the taper so you end up automatically starting to lift the rod near the end of the retrieve to pick for the next cast. but some sort of flouresent maker paint could probably fix this.

Final verdict would give it a 7 plus out of 10. A very useful line to have in the tackle box certianly has advantages that other lines dont.

Default Nice Review

Hi Icejohn, I liked that review. Just as you want to hear it, plain and simple. Does it or doesn't it work, in your words yes.

Best Regards

Default clear "colour" obvious advantage.

In theory trout wont be spooked by the clear colour of the line as much as say a bright yellow line. eg trout take buzzers swimming up wind with this line trout may take the buzzers side on eg swimming under the line. But like i said in the review time will tell. Maybe on a small stream using a 3wt version of this line maybe produce some visual better results eg if trout swimming in mid currant are NOT spooked if the line passes overhead. Hard to tell on a big lake with the version i have.

Thumbs up I Liked it.

I'm a fan. Got my hands on one of these new fly lines at last. Made for the super stealthy, New Zealand Fly Fishing market. Where you may only get one cast. A good solid performance. I first fished it on a windy day at Ellerdine Lakes in Shropshire.

I'm not a fan of Factory fitted loops, so I removed this and whipped on braided loop. Lovely feel to the line, being super slick it just wants to go. Nice shooting line that excels in the wind, even directly into it. Ridge Technology enhancing the shooting characteristics of this line, by reducing compression on the tip ring. This I believe adds distance to my casting.

When the line is on the water, it is difficult to detect, so marking the 10ft point with a permanent pen, is a sound move, depending on your rod size of course. The line looks opaque on the water, blending in well.

This line laid straight on the surface, with no visible memory, but it's the bite detection I liked. At all ranges you feel the takes and nibbles, with hook setting at long range, not being a problem.

Each line is size marked at the reel end point, making identification simple.

I'd like to see this, in lighter line weights for the ultimate stealthy Brook fishers here in the UK.

Would I get another, too right!

If you want a stealthy alternative, with a mono core, plus the added benefit of Ridge Technology then give this a go. The Ridge Clear Floater is well worth it.

Regards

Stuart

Are these Delta taper capable of carrying large/heavy flies, maybe if the front taper was cut back? I'm thinking of trying one for saltwater.

Default Interested in your findings

Hi JRT, I don't know about Saltwater applications or large flies. I fish standard sized lures with no hindrance during casting.

Saltwater patterns are new to me, but I'd be interested in what you discover.

Regards

Stuart
