Zhu split cane fly rod 7' #4.
Zhu split cane fly rod 7' #4.
Performs well - poor cosmetically.

Default Zhu split cane fly rod 7' #4.

Available from EBay, costs vary. Mine cost me £114 inc carriage from China.

What you get.
A 2-piece rod, spare tip, and quality cloth bag.
Click the image to open in full size.

Cosmetics.
Superficially nice. Red silk whippings, nickel silver ferrules and reel-seat hardware. Blonde cane with nodes arranged spiral fashion. Half-Wells cork handle.
Closer inspection revealed off-set tip ring (on both tips), off-set butt ring, loads of filler in the handle and a wood (of some description) reel-seat which had a horrible varnish job. The cane blank looks nice (good varnish job) and the epoxy over the whippings is neat and even.

Performance.
The reel-seat works well. The ferrules are tight and come apart with a nice pop.
For fishing I used a set-up which comprised an old Youngs Condex reel, a vintage silk line, and a knotted leader starting with 8lb bs and tapering down to 2lb bs.
The rod performs straight casts and roll casts beautifully. It is accurate and effortless to use. The Condex balances the rod nicely. We have another Zhu cane rod user on here and although his rod is a seven and a half footer I thought his early experiences of using the rod, and his comments were worth including in this review (thanks Steven), especially in light of the fact that I have only been able to catch small grayling with mine (this is not the rods fault).

"so it all felt quite good to me, and I just needed to slow down a bit.
I took three wild trout on it in three casts from the same pool on the Eden, the first about 3/4lb then one about 1.25lb then the third was over 1.5lbs, and it handled them beautifully.
The fish has its own way for a while, and the rod was bent right over but soon recovered.
All in all, I would say for what I paid for it,I am more than happy, and don't feel I have wasted a lot of money on something I may use six times a year."

So there you have it. Nice rod, performs well, let down by poor finishing. Steven's rod is evidently not poorly finished and to me that speaks volumes about final quality control.

Incidentally, I have no real worries about the blank. These are sold to a number of outlets for finishing and if there were any real problems there would be more horror stories than there are. In fact I was offered a Zhu rod by a UK rod builder for over £200 (he does something with the ferrules, although on my rod the ferrules are very good).

In summary.......

Good points.
Lovely in use.
Rings, ferrules and reel-seat hardware are quality items.
Whipping and blank finishing is attractive.
Inexpensive.

Bad points.
General finishing, handle is not great. Reel-seat needs sanded and re-varnished.

Overall I'm delighted with the rod - a good introduction the fishing with cane. Now I want a hand-built British rod!

Thanks DB,

Great report! And it just goes to show, the Zhu products are OK, not brilliant but excellent for purpose! I have a Zhu, Silk Line that I use with my 6ft.3in, #3,weight Cane Rod! (Tim Harris Custom Cane Rod) the line is a treat to use; and after the initial breaking in period, has become really supple, I may buy another one for my #4, weight!

What is the weight of the Zhu Cane Rod? Also could you post some pictures?

Thanks

Mostyn

A good review David, nice to read someone else's feelings on these rods.
It appears I have been more fortunate than you, as I don't have any of the problems you describe.
All the rings are well lined up, the cork is extremely good, with only superficial amounts of filler, in fact I have several premium grade rods with far more.
The reel seat is a nice bit of burl, and looks smart, also as you say the nickel silver reel fittings hold the reel very well, and firm, with no movement.
The lack of a keeper ring is not really a worry, as I usually wrap the tippet around the reel anyway.
I was fortunate enough to be able to both admire the rod, and fish with it before deciding to purchase it, thanks to Buzz.
I would describe the action as medium/fast, which is ideal for me, but not fast enough for Buzz.
I fished with it again for 5 hours yesterday on Troutbeck, close to home, and took 9 wildies with ease, fast little devils they are too.
It has a very responsive tip IMO and recovers well.
Troutbeck is a very tree laden small beck, yet I was able to side cast with it very well.
For the amount of times I will use this rod, and the places it will be used, I think it is a first class bit of kit for the money.
It's no G Bamboo, or Timmy Harris, but it does the job well for me, and that's all I ask, as I am not a serious cane fisherman.
To date I have tried my Hardy Marksman reel on it, which looks superb, but is a tad light, and I will I think, end up using my W Salter 31/8" which both looks and fits very well.
As for silk lines, I may try one at some point, however for the short range work I am using it for, a Cortland Sylk seems fine.
S.
Just for Mostyn, the weight is approx 4 3/8oz, for a 7.6ft, how's that compared to the 6ft Vixen M.

This is the W Salter 3 1/8" reel, which seems to suit it best.

Hi Mostyn,

I've placed a pic in the review. The reel (for scale) is a three and a quarter inch wide-spool Condex.

I've been asked several times about the weight of the rod. I have no way of measuring it accurately, but that reel balances it nicely, and it's absolutely no effort to hold or cast (much easier than my Orvis and Greys carbon rods).

I'm pleased you're getting on with the Zhu line. Talking with an Usk regular yesterday I believe things are a little quiet there too?
Roll on September!

Cheers,

Dogbloke (David)

Thumbs up

Looks like you have some fun.
So pleased your all finding the bamboo game to your liking.
Rods under 8.6 usually balance Ok with a correctly sized vintage Youngs reel.
Go for a Beaudex thats what I recommend super little reels and not to expensive they just look the part on a bamboo rod.
They were top of the range in there day and will outlast many modern reels.
Looks like prices are starting to rise I will have to stop talking about them

Keep it up and thanks for the recommendation

PS. The rods look nice

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the comments.

I think that this is the point. These rods are a good intro to fishing with cane, and are probably much safer than buying a vintage cane rod straight off.

Just to clarify, Gary was not the UK builder who offered me a Zhu rod for £200+.

Thanks for the helpful comments about the reels too. When the time comes (hopefully sooner rather than later) I'll have no hesitation in placing my next rod order with Gary. Thanks to the Zhu rod I now have a pretty good idea of the blank I want.

Cheers,

David

I had already made the same enquiry of Dogbloke - apparently the ebay shop is closed at the moment. I have emailed Zhu to ascertain availablity, I will let you know the result.

I can tell you, that I spoke to Mr Zhu, about 2 weeks ago, and he will supply direct, any size for $180 delivered.
Hope that helps. S.

An update on the Zhu rod.
I purchased a vintage silk line some time ago which I recently re-treated. This was not ready when I did my initial review, but I've since fished the rod with the newly-oiled/cured silk line, a furled teader (thanks to mrtrout) and a new (old) Youngs Pridex 3 and 1/8th" reel (fabulous bit of kit), and had a couple of decent fish to test the playing power.

The rod is fantastic with the line/reel/leader set-up.
This morning I was able, with a 20' cast, to place my fly to within a few inches of a rising fish, between bushes and under overhangs. The fact that the fish, once hooked weighed only a few ounces was absolutely unimportant.
For an average caster (me) to obtain that accuracy with little effort speaks volumes for bamboo and silk. Zhu's contribution has to be acknowledged too.

I think the Zhu rods are a great intro into split-cane.
If you buy one please make the effort to obtain a silk line too. You should also look into furled leaders.

One thing - if you have casting faults (I've found a couple I didn't know I had) the split-cane will highlight them for you!
