Snowbee Geo Wading Jacket
Snowbee Geo Wading Jacket

Default Snowbee Geo Wading Jacket

First Thoughts
Light, nice design aesthetically and yes of course its green but not the usual plain olive that seems for so long to have been the norm in UK wading design. The two tone ("pine-green") colouration works nicely I think. The body length is slightly longer than some similar jackets which I prefer personally. I don't mind the bottom getting wet if I wade deep - the main pockets are kept at chest height anyway so unless you plan to go kamikaze wading then their contents should remain safe and dry.

I like some of the extra touches such as the underarm venting zips (waterproofed) and the fleece-lined handwarmer pockets for example as unless you can afford a whole range of clothing, a jacket like this often ends up filling several roles covering all the year and weather conditions therefore.

Performance and Opinion
Obviously wading demands getting wet. Well actually, it demands getting into the water but of course your jacket and waders should hopefully stop any direct contact while keeping you comfortable at the same time. Snowbee use a double system of adjustment on their cuffs - one on the inner neoprene sleeve which I liked and the other on the outer fabric. It was this outer one that by the end of the review had me wondering as I know I am not the worlds best caster but I did find that the line kept getting caught on the upward facing end of the velcro adjustment strap. By adjusting it tighter or looser the problem went away but at the position that was comfortable for me it was a recurring problem.

Overall though this is a relatively minor complaint in what turned out to be a very serviceable garment. I used it in the rain when I was pleased to find no leaks anywhere or folds for water to gather - the high collar when zipped right up was great for keeping cold draughts out too! I also forced myself to route march across a couple of fields on a warm day with the underarm vents open and while I was still gently steaming by the end, I was not running with perspiration either as I know I do with some of my other jackets that do not have this option.

The hood (which has a stiffened peak and a drawstring to pull it back off your face) folds up into the collar when not in use which I prefer to a detachable one as at last you always know where it it then. The two main front pockets hold a couple of good sized fly boxes and there are two built in coiled retractors for accessories such as snips and forceps. There seemed to be just the right amount of storage therefore without going overboard. What use is a lightweight jacket if you then load it down with gear!

The Geo is available in sizes small (36/38") to XXL (44/46").

Perfect jacket to pair with the Snowbee Prestige zip-front waders we previously reviewed also. Snowbee continue to make quality gear at great prices but just watch out for that outer cuff strap and make sure it is fastened down out of harms way.

Dont you think the reports should come from someone unbiased?
That reads like an advertising editorial

I agree with you there Mark.

As it happens, I bought one when my Simms G4 kept falling off me due to weight loss. No way could I afford another Simms at £/$ rate so I searched for a good alternative.

It is a cracking jacket for the money, in fact it's a cracking jacket full stop. can't comment on durability, only had it a few weeks, but I did have it out in a good rainstorm and it didn't leak.

Only adverse comment is that I think the cuffs are a bit awkward...you do them up twice which is needlessly complicated.

The Trousers are very good, too.

By the way, you'll get a much better deal from Grommit.

Gents, I think you are missing the point that adding this type of review is just continuing to seed this area for discussion which is now what you are doing so job done I guess! ;-)

Of course, it is an editorial at the end of the day - I wrote it for the website originally and I am the editor but I do strive to give my personal opinion in the First Thoughts and Performance and Opinion sections, and I also make sure I take the products out and use them on the water rather than just getting them out of the box and having a quick look.

The Features section is taken straight from the Snowbee website but then there is no reason to try and rewrite those particular facts.

Glad to see you more or less agree with my own comments royvs on the secondary cuff fasteners.

Any one else have this jacket and willing to chime in with their comments on what they either like or dislike about it?

Fair enough Editor, i guess the difference is you get paid for promoting something, we dont.

I am not sure what a "laminated Nylon Dobby" is, does it have a frtiz head and sunburst tail?

Thanks Buzz - yes that is true, we do largely only review products from those business we have a relationship with. HOWEVER, I do make it a point to let them know that we expect our reviewer whoever it is, to be able to give an open and honest opinion and that we be allowed to take the product out into the environment in which it is to be used wherever practically possible for us - i.e. they might get it back a bit dirty!

To their credit, companies like Snowbee as it happens, have thanked us for our candour and fair and honest reviews and are intrigued to see the reactions and comments on our forums. Of course they cannot react to every point made but opinions can be formed and even changed sometimes.

It's hard to find any really badly made products these days it has to be said, so all are typically fit for some purpose if priced right. If we do ever come across any real howlers we go back to the business in question first and give them a chance to rectify or answer our comments for the sake of fairness. We have not had to do this for a while which is good but where again the forum members are of great value is in being able to stand up and make fair comments about products either we or someone else has reviewed which of course is always a very personal opinion anyway at the end of the day. What is nice to see is that even if someone has some typically very obvious personal grudge against something (valid or not), there are usually many more members willing to stand up and say "hang on a minute - that's not right and here's what I think".

'The value of discussion'! and why the Fly Forums are by far the UK's and probably Europe's most visited fly fishing website. :-)
