Fly rod saver review

Default Fly rod saver review

My first thoughts on receiving the fly rod saver were sceptical but i got this free from the man who came up with the idea and produced it in exchange for a honest review so here goes. I tried this out yesterday at my local river. When i first got to the river i put the rod saver in the ground it went in easy and seemed very solid although the bank was quite soft there might have been problems if if was rocky. When my line had been put through the rings i put the rod in it while tackling up,the butt went in the holder easy enough and it held very firm and it would have stayed there no problem if it had been windy. When you need to change a fly or have a cuppa the rod saver is a great gadget no more leaning your rod against a tree or laying it on the floor with the fear of treading on it which to be honest i have never done but ive come close to a hundred times. Carrying it around is easy I just put a bulldog clip on the ring and clip it onto my bag when on the move, its also very light so no theres weight issues. Its build quality is good it should last years and i cant see it marking your rod butt as some on the forum have said but only time will tell on that one, as for price it does seem a bit expensive but if you tread on your rod that will be even more so, If you normally fish with two rods its ideal for keeping one out of the way. Would i buy one, on seeing it in an advertisement no i probably wouldnt but after using it i think its a good investment and it does the job its made for and does it well. The only reservation i have is the price which i think will put a lot of people off and im sure if someone copied it it would be much cheaper. As for recommending it i think its one of those products you wish you had bought after youve trod on your rod and broken it. Thanks for reading - Lee

Mine arrived in the post this morning, had a play in the back garden, first impressions are good, goes in the ground nice and easy, it is best if you ease the one side of the rod retaining clip out a little and sort of roll the handle in, I do not foresee any problems with damage or marking the cork. I will do a full review once I have used it a few times in anger. P.S. I offered to pay Al for the rod saver and still do a review, but he would have none of it, top man alnz.

I recieved my one on Monday but I'm recovering after an operation and a wound has now become infected, so it'll be a while before I can field test it. Looking at it my concern was that someone attached it to their waistcoat via the keyring attached to it and had a fall and it stabbed into them. Just a thought..

Thank you Lee, I appreciate you taking the time to test Fly Rod Saver and to write such a detailed and fair review.

The product has been tested under really tough conditions and I am confident it will withstand many years of use.

Setting a price for a new product is really hard. I researched the market as best I could and tried to balance a desire to recoup the many thousands of $'s this has cost me so far, with a sensible price. Having said that the market always dictates price! Any views on price (currently just over£12 plus shipping) would also be appreciated.

I received my rod saver also, haven't been out fishing yet but have tested in the back garden. Like the other comments I agree with it not damaging the cork on the rod, the build quality is good and can see it lasting a long time! It goes easy into the ground and is very light but still strong! I don't think that £12 plus shipping is to expensive due to the price of a broken rod! I am also looking at a way to secure it to my boat seat to keep the rod safe hen I'm not using it or
Traveling in the boat! I would also like to thank the creator for sending one free of charge, really appreciate it thanks again!

Hi again, Ithink the price is fair enough having tested it but the shipping added may put people off a bit and some will look at it as a bit of plastic and not see the real advantage-like i said in the review its great even if your just using one rod it keeps it safe and out of harms way but if using two rods its even better.
I will take mine every time i go out fishing and if i lost it wouldnt hesitate to buy another.
Once again thanks.

I have also pondered the idea of having one on an extending bankstik for wading I know it could be a hassle to carry round but if fishing with 2 rods it would save getting out of water to get your other rod or even to hold the rod whilst tying another fly on etc... Does anyone have any views on this.

My fly rod saver arrived mid week but i've not had chance to try it out until today.First impressions were good as like others have stated it's a well thought out and made product.I arrived on the the bank this morning, stuck the saver in the ground ( which was easy ) and tackled up.It was a windy day today but the rod didn't budge and made tackling up easier than just laying the rod on the ground.I took two rods out with me today one a #6 and the other #7,not worrying about the spare rod was a real blessing. The only thing i'd like to mention is if you own a #7 weight and above with a fighting butt ( bulb ) you may have trouble fitting it in the the saver. My Z-Axis did but only just, although it was still stable in the windy conditions.Would i buy one or recommend the product, yes I'm certain of that

Oh and i caught 3 bows today which was a bonus

Neil

Thank you for taking the time to review and I'm really glad you liked the product. Fly Rod Saver will take most rods with a butt of 32mm or smaller. I have a 10wt for saltwater fly fishing that fits the device. But you're right some lighter rods do have wide ends. Have a look at the features here: Fly Rod Saver Features | Fly Rod Saver
