Want to get some distance? This is it!

I bought this line some three weeks ago, but because of work only got to try this today.

Straight out of the box, I thought nice colour. With a head of Optic Green and a Grey running line, this is a supple floating line. Factory fitted front loop and is 40 yds long and ridged. I fitted mine onto an Okuma Airstream 7/9 after removing some backing and cutting the loop off. Marking the first 10 ft in bands, with a permanent marker as an indicator for quick takes, works well for me.

Peeling the fly line off the reel for some short range work, you realise how good this head colour is, even at ranges to 20ft. It offers good bite detection too, with a low stretch core.

Aerodynamics are good especially into the wind and you can feel that this wants to go, with good line flow through the rings. Though it's when you push the boundaires and go beyond 30ft for distances that will boost your ego.

Don't get me wrong here, this won't make you the world's best caster overnight. You have to get the timing right. Push the forward cast too early without the line straightening out behind and you'll be disappointed. Wait and watch the line straighten, then push and you'll be as amazed as I was.

At 65 feet, this head isn't for everyone, but it will put your flies into places you just couldn't quite reach, until now!

If you really want to see the sort of distance you can cast, then give the Rangefinder a go.

I read the article on the new lines in this months Trout Fisherman.

My main reservation, is that any Airflo floating line I have used, has had terrible coiling and felt very plasticky.

Great intermediates and sinkers though.

I quite liked the look of the Delta taper that was reviewed in the article.

I have has one of these for a few months and now use it for all my bank work. It casts extremely well and is relatively supple although a bit stiffer than the Airflo Ultra Supple. Floats well and lays pretty straight.

I found you do not even need to get all of the very long head out (can be an issue with vegetation on some venues) to get a decent distance. If you have room to get the full head out and are using single fly, I was able to get 35 yds plus with it.

what weight did you use since in my experiance airflo line weights some a good and some not so...

eg 6-7 is great and 7-8 one is fine ...if you get me.

I am thinking of getting an 8 for distance casting but if the head is very large and as somone mentions if too plasticy then it has the spring effect...

Default One rating

Hi Icejohn, The Rangefinder is line weight specific, ie one rating. I used a 7#

Hope this clarifies your question?

Best Regards

Hi Nick, Click on the link to view the profiles on most of Airflo's lines, from their US catalogue on PDF. You'll see the Rangefinder there too.

Hope this helps?

Was out again with this line yesterday and catching at my extreme range of around 30 yds plus. Best fish of eight and a half pounds that smashed my Black Diawl Bach to pieces, but worth it.

Best Regards

Stuart
