Default New AtomSix blanks. 3M advanced resins and Autoclave Technology

Well after a lot of hard work and many a frustrating day waiting for material deliveries etc, I have finally taken delivery of the first of my new blanks.

They are made exclusively for AtomSix on my new mandrel sets using the much talked about 3M advanced resins. They are manufactured in the UK and as far as I am aware, they are the only trout rod blanks in the world cured in an autoclave. So not only do they utilise the benefits of the new 'silica nano' resins that we've all read about, but being cured in an autoclave means that the microscopic structure of the carbon/resin matrix is at aerospace industry standards.

In the coming weeks I will be putting together more information about the resins and the autoclave tech, but for now I just wanted to let everyone know that I have a fantastic new product for people to consider.

Currently I have the following models, though this is increasing weekly as we fine tune the prototypes.

7'6" #3 Tachyon (fast)

9' #5 Tachyon (fast)

9' #5 Neutrino (med/fast)

10' #7 Neutrino (med/fast)

10' #7 Nucleus (medium)

10' #7 Tachyon - next week

Details of pricing etc can be found on my website. However, just as an example, a custom built 9' #5 Tachyon starts at £350 and now comes in an aluminium tube.

For you kit junkies out there the ERN of the 9' #5 Tachyon test model was 7.1, the AA 72 deg. and the CCF 90.

I just rechecked the numbers because the reading above are for a bare blank. Fully built and the AA is closer to 70 and the ERN 6.7

**UPDATE** The numbers for the 9' #5 Neutrino are ERN 6.3, AA 65 and CCF 89. This one is stunning! Where as the Tachyon is perfect for punching extreme distances, this one is a fantastic all rounder. My current favourite!!

Feel free to email, PM or call me for more info.

I am not totally au fait with the CCS but must admit that I am struggling to see how a rod with an ERN of 7.1 can be described as a 5 weight?!

Hi Dogtanian

Firstly, thanks for reading the thread and taking the time to write something.

In my experience with the CCS, the faster a rods action (higher the AA) the further away from the AFTMA number you find the ERN. For example the med/fast model's ERN is closer to 6 and when eventually the slower action rod is developed then that's ERN is likely to be closer to the 5.5 figure that is often touted as being correct.

Obviously the CCS isn't the last word and far from perfect but it does give us some sort of starting point.

I did think long and hard about whether I should put those figures on my post as it kind of puts me up there to be shot down. In the end I decided to go with them as that's what they are. I'm sure that others will look at that ERN and come to the same conclusion, however all I can say is that it cast's a 5wt line beautifully, albeit you need enough line out to load it and cast it correctly and will of course handle a line heavier as with all fast action rods. The action won't suit everyone, but then I wouldn't expect it to which is why we develope different flex curves.

I hope that helps.

Steve

Hi Steve, thanks for the response. As I said I am not totally familiar with the CCS. To be honest the more I read about it the more confused I get!

Hope that these blanks are a great success for you.

Hi Dog

Yeah the CCS is far from definitive and its basic principle is to bending the blank a third of its length. As you can imagine that won't work on a faster blank if we always state that the ERN should be 0.5 above AFTMA rating. However it does give us something to work with beyond the traditional methods.

Thanks again for contributing. Much appreciated.

Steve

Hi Munro

I'll send one up to you later in the spring for you guys at Tinto to try. Or I might even come up and see you and bring some rods with me.

Default 10 out 10 for initiative

I think its great that someone in the UK is prepared to take on the big guns and hopefully deliver the same or better rods at a price that gives more people an opportunity to benefit from the latest technology.

Steve I hope your investment pays dividends and you get a lot more orders than the big boys

Hi Steve,

Any plans to manufacture a 9'6" 7# weight; if so I might be interested in your more mid/tip offering??

Chris
