Default Starting Pike Fishing

I want to start fishing for pike on the fly and reading through various posts there is lots of useful advice.

The only piece of information I can't find is how to attatch the leader to the fly line.

Do you use a braided loop as you would for trout fishing or is there another method?

Different people have their own ideas of leaders set up and I was going to use 15/20 lb mono or flourocarbon with a wire trace. Is this ok?

I have spent many years catching pike conventionaly but won't go for them with the fly until I am happy with my complete setup and as I said before I am unsure how to attatch the leader.

There are many ways to do as you ask - Personally, I use a whipped on braided loop, but in Salmon grade for the strength. I use 140 denier UTC or Kevlar tying thread for the very tight whipping covered by a drop of waterproof superglue. Do not use just the sleeving provided - it can be peeled off by your tip ring if a pike held on a short line "does a runner" when your flyline is within the rod.

A wire bite proof trace of no less than 12" will cope with even very large fish - you need to think in terms of how long the pike's jaws are to make it impossible for the teeth to touch nylon/floro - even 15" is not too long.

As for leader - I use 26 pound Rio hard mono myself, as I preffer to bully even large pike to the boat as quickly as possible - to enable "happy releases" with my fish as fresh as possible.

Small tip - if you keep your leader + trace length shorter than the length between tip ring and keeper ring, you won't have problems with the leader to flyline connection getting jammed every time you reel in to move around in your boat or on the bank.

HTH ... Tony
