Default Pointers for a total newbie to predator fishing

Hi everyone,

I must apologise for the ridiculously vague nature of my question, but i'm after a few tips on how to get into fishing for pike, zander and perch. I'd like to fish for them on the fly and by spinning lures. Don't really want to bait fish.

I've been fishing for about 12 years, but it's been exclusively fly fishing for salmon and trout. To me, to get a days fishing i go to a reservoir and pay a day ticket, or go to scotland for a week.

I have no idea how this process works for fishing for pike/zander/perch, whether you go to somewhere with day-tickets (if so, where?), or if you just find a lake and go?

Can anyone give me some basic pointers on how to get started for the above species? Mainly interested in Pike, but would like to catch some zander and perch too.

I'm located in Herts, so if anyone has any local info useful to me, that would be great.

Jon

A bit of a wide-open question! First, you need to find your pike, which will need some research. I fish the Thames (around weir-pools), as that is convenient for me, and produces some pike, as well as perch, which are quite busy in the Thames these days. However, all sorts of waters may be suitable, from canals to reservoirs to small streams (though not too small) to natural lakes. I would suggest working google hard, and reading some of the modern books on pike fishing; even books majoring on bait fishing will help with location. David Wolstencroft-dodds (I think I've spelt him correctly) is an expert on fly-fishing for pike, and a day guided by him would almost certainly be instructive. It might also surprise you regarding the size of flies that he uses - think meat hooks here! Another idea: nip up to Grafham with some pike gear; I've not fished there for some time, but remember some pretty impressive pike, not to mention my best ever bream. As regards gear, you've probably got what you need, though I favour 9wt and upwards, simply because I'm a lousy caster of big flies. Trawl through this forum, and you'll get lots of pointers; you really need to do lots of reading before the fishing, and don't forget your local friendly tackle dealer.
