I think this rule on the canal is unfortunate (I would love to fly fish it) but it's probably as a result of the divide between coarse and fly fishing and some level of ignorance (on both sides) of techniques and equipment.

I'm not sure if you can "blame" H&S. As Greg has stated, he's emailed the committee and they're going to discuss it at the next meeting. Hopefully they'll lift the ban as I quite fancy fishing the canal with fly as well as bait and lures.

Frithy,
I don't agree you on the "There is the option of disregarding the rule and flyfish anyway." ... it would be hypocritical if you then complain about people poaching, etc. The Basingstoke Canal is a special case I think. It still maintains the closed season as I'm not sure BW actually "own" it.

Hi Lawrence.

I should have put a LOL after my last sentance. It was meant to be read "Tounge in Cheek". Apologies for any confusion.

I hope you get your desired decision from the Committee. Please let us know what the decision is.

Ernie

Default Canal fly fishing.

I fly fish my local canal for pike. I've found that with the growth of commercial fisheries there are far fewer anglers on there and I often have miles of canal to myself.
Walkers are not really a problem as they approach slowly and you become aware of them. Cyclists are a pain. They travel along the towpath at speed, often without making a great deal of noise. They are upon you quite suddenly. I have adopted the practice of always looking over my shoulder before casting. I'm just that extra bit more careful than when I'm on more remote rivers.
It's a pity that you are not allowed because there is some great fishing to be had.
