Default Fishing for Carp

Morning All.

Ive been givien the chance by the "Course" part of the club here @ work to go with them to their club matches.

Ive queried about the places they visit and if Carp is stocked.

My question is...... Would a 9ft Loomis Glx anti gravity be suitable.

and

which fly or flies would be appropriate, something like a deer hair blob?

Any advice appreciated or even something ive missed.

Carl,

Depends if they have a serious Match element to the club or not. If its does and you turn up with a fly rod, your fellow club members may well p**s themselves laughing! And of course fly-fishing may well be banned in the competition and at the fishery itself.

I used to fish the coarse match circuit, (until I saw the light...!) and a fly rod in a match may not be looked too kindly upon!

But that aside, carp on the fly is fantastic fun! An elk hair blob which looks like a pellet is great for summer sport. You'll be hard pushed to catch on the surface during the winter months though, I tend to do most of my surface carp "fly fishing" in the summer. And my Greys GRXi 7/8 is more than adequate. But if you fancy some real fun, use a 4#!!

Default Rod Selection

Carl,

I use similar rods to Howard namely a Greys GRX 6/7wt 9' 6" (the old model) and more lately a Greys Platinum X 7wt 10' 6" (again, the old model). I have caught carp to nearly 20lbs on both although I find the Platinum gives better control close in.

I always let the fish run a few times before bringing it in as I broke the tip of the Platinum once after being too eager to land a sizeable mirror. Fortunately, Greys are brilliant at sorting out breakages.

I also have a GRX 3/4wt 8' but I would probably only risk that if the carp in the lake were all under 10lb and on sleeping tablets!

Paul

We use a variety of flies, some of which look like dog biscuits but are actually spun deer hair creations. We do chum the Carp up though with dog biscuits then make a cast to where a particular fish is swirling/taking the free samples... It's then a case of watching the fly line shoot forward or try chancing an early strike.

Great fish. What methods do you undertake when the water is murky and you can't see the fish?

Mainly, it's all surface stuff and you are watching fish take your offering off the top. So, it doesn't matter what the clarity of the water is, although it might help in some situations.

Last summer whilst on holiday in France I managed to catch 4 carp up to 15lb on a heavy Bloodworm pattern (size10 hook). Basically just a body of wound red wool.

My method was basically to roam the bank looking for patches of bubbles fizzing to the surface indicating where carp (& bream) were rooting around on the bottom. I cast the heavy fly on a longish leader (water was 6' deep so I used an 18' long leader) and let the fly fish static. Takes were indicated by the reel emptying as the fish felt the hook and bolted. Great sport.

Next year I'm going to be better prepared and make sure I have the following:

1. Heavy Bloodworms.
2. Deer hair pellets.
3. Marabou Bloodworms with beadheads.
