The river season is not far away and i am looking for some idea's for chub flies. Has anyone any idea's or favorite flies they use for Chub, Roach, Dace and Perch will be my main quarry on the Ouse this season.

On my local Ribble some anglers use a giant black ethafoam beetle with legs made from knotted 10lb maxima chamelion or similar. Floated past overhanging trees it can pull some nice big chub.
I'm sometimes harrassed by dace when trying for trout so I can tell you they love a dry Greenwells.

a little mouse pattern can work well brought back across the top near bushes etc etc

Mmm interesting post this, I shall be interested in the replies. I have an article on fly fishing for chub in front of me now (FF & F Sept 2009). If you don't have a copy you can have this one.
The man fishing recommends a Rubber Legged Stimulator. Bit of a monster, floating, with four great big legs. Not unlike I'd guess the fly mentioned above by muddler9. Big bushy and leggy seems to be the order of the day.

There's another interesting article FF & F jan 2010, roving for Roach. Hares ear, ptn and variations of are this ones prefered choice.

Me? Oh I'd just give them a Black Pennell, solves all

Thanks for the replies. My first thought was to make up something that look like coarse fishing baits I have used such as maggots, tares, hemp and bread flake that sort of thing. A maggot could be a red or white buzzer. Tares or Hemp are just small and round egg pattern and bread flake could be a white Cat's Whisker or baby doll which i have tried before for chub with no results or anything whitish, but chub will eat anything.

Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,

Indeed, soon we'll be able to get out on the river... I had a crack through Buckingham last season and when not catching trees a good old Elk Hair Caddis tempted a few Chub, small ones mind... Further downstream I've had them on Klinks (olive and black seem best, and also raise Roach, Rudd, Bleak, Dace... everything actually!) and real clunky dries... They seem to like a splosh.. Also had some joy with PTNs, picking up Perch too. Not had much joy with GRHEs but have tied up few micro efforts in readiness for the 16th.. I'm thining of Roach with these, most I've caught have been more by luck than judgement..

For Perch Black and Green lures with a Gold head and Marabou tail have been good, I posted a pic of a cracker I got last year on another thread.. But to be honest the Ouse is so packed with Perch it's more a matter of timing to get the biggies, of which there a re many! I'll be trying the bigger Lures for Perch, Pike and Chub this year... The Mouse fly seems like a real tempter! Beetle patterns, big and splashy preferably, have a decent rep and will get a flick with some regularity from me this year...

Then we have to think about heavy Nymphs and Barbel.... Hmmmmm..

I'll be interested to hear how you get on.. Some clonking Chub and Perch in that river.. And I'll testify that they'll take a fly, albeit less readily than a Trout!

Tight lines

R

Hi Ian,

I'm looking forward to June 16th too. I usually have success with chub with an elk-hair sedge, but I find my all time can-do fly is a small streamer (wooly ******, minnows). It works with both chub and perch. I usually tie them in black and heavy and aim at tree roots, deep pools.

I am going to try my luck this year nymph fishing for barbel. Should be great fun if I connect!

Alan

Hi Ian,

Nope, I'm a little distant to fish that stretch regularly, so just have a go on the free stretch when my wife demands a trip to Milton Keynes to go shopping.. I know what I'd prefer to be doing!

I think this year I'll join Biggleswade and Hitchin as they have a decent amount on the Ivel, which also has some clonking Perch Chub and Barbel, especially for such a small river...
