Default First Perch of 2010

Hi Guys

Popped up the canal this afternoon to have a bash at the Roach Bright sun 25 oC big mixed shoals of Roach and perch nothing big but catchable ...........well maybe !

Hooked and lost a roach on a size 14 Black pennel then i changed to a size 16 blood worm ...........ended up getting side tracked by the perch landed 17 in all lost another 5

14 to the Bloodworm
2 to my lite damsel
1 to a size 16 plastic bead spider thing, no monsters but great fun on the 9' 3# and 2lb line.

Click the image to open in full size.

I ended up sight casting at perch and striking when they took it, although i did take a few simply blind casting and a jurky fig 8 retrieve.

Out of interest i tried the blood worm pattern in 12# 10# some interest and bumps but they seemed very unsure , dropping to 16# they simply nailed it !

Is it not close season at the moment for coarse fish.

It is indeed, but only on rivers I think. No close season on canals or still waters.

I stand corrected, sorry Englander. A very strange law though IMO, surely canal fish need time to spawn in peace as well.

Yes it is close season for coarse fish on rivers and drains, the season opens again on june 16. Most canals are not subject to the close season so you can happily fish on them, I think one or two canals though are subject to the close season. But I cannot remember which ones they are!
Well Done Englander Perfect perch there, and you caught plenty of them. Sounds like you had a great day, thanks for the story looking forward to some more!

Englander's location is central Scotland. Is there any close season for coarse fish in Scotland? Don't think there is.

No close season in Scotland, but that does not mean to say that the fish don't need peace to spawn.

The 2 reservoirs I fish are full of perch . You can catch 20 + easy in an hour on a summers night . I can't understand why people ask what fly and what tactics to use to catch perch , they will take anything on any retrieve .
They are a total pain in the neck , We catch them easily and chuck them over our shoulders for the birds to eat . Hate the bloody things .
