Beggers belief You are lucky to have such "easy" perch, in the canal ive only ever had the odd one here and there before, they certinally are NOT "easy" in the canal, but even if there were they still deserve respect, and god forbid you are going to kill them do it "humanely" and make use of them either ferret food or give them to your local poles

There is No close season for coarse fish in scotland or even a rod licence for that matter re peace to breed............. its only since the recent heat wave ive seen any and given the canal is stuffed to bursting with Roach/Perch/Pike/ fishing for them a few weeks before the "English open season" does seem to have done them any harm.

No wonder the world is up s**t creek when there is that sort of waste and destruction going on! No animal deserves the treatment you're describing. I hope you think about your actions and maybe change your view. Treat them with some respect for god's sake.

Perch are beautiful fish, they're hard scrappers and a worthy quarry. They're fairly bold on occasion, but sometimes they won't look at anything, or will follow a fly and then ignore it. You change to a new pattern - they follow that a couple of times, then ignore it. I've been through a dozen flies before now - and usualluy none work! This can drive you mad when you can see a good sized perch and it's not playing ball. They're more canny than you'd think. Hooking larger one's isn't easy. They often come up short - or just nip at the fly to see if it's edible.
