I would follow Graham's advice very carefully Ali and not administer a misplaced, sarcastic response to a forumite with considerable experience in pike fishing.

I did as you did many years ago on a wooden fishing platform when I first started fly-fishing for pike until I recognized the error of my ways. The first fish I caught ended up with a splinter in its eye. I haven't done it again since.

If I know I'm not going to have something soft like grass to rest a pike on out of the water I'll either take a mat or unkook it in the water. Unhooking mats are cheap and easily portable nowadays if you need one for this purpose.

Good luck with your future expeditions.

I could have had a dead fish standing by ready to plop it back in the water so that the Pike did not feel hard done by seeing as how it was not actually getting an easy meal.

Yes - all these things I could have done for the 5 seconds (approx) I had the fish out the water and laying on that nasty wet wood - that's right wood, not gravel or stone - some wet wood.

In the grand scheme of things Graham laying the Pike down on some wet wood is really the least of issues you should have with that photograph if you feel so strongly that you have got to point out something to do with a fish and its welfare on a fishing forum.

Just a thought...

Cheers,

Alistair
I'm sorry if i have in some way offended you, i merely wished to point out that if someones goes out of their way to catch a fish and return it, that it should be returned in as close to it's original condition as possible. This is my view and i understand it may not be the view of others, but a certain amount of respect is only fair when dealing with a wild fish, i.e not a stockie bred to be caught, killed and eaten...

Again purely my view,

Cheers,

Graham

Which is precisely my view Graham - I just think that sometimes people can be just a bit quick to judge others without any thought - watch out maybe someone will pick holes in a photo you post innocently

Really? The only thought that went through my head on seeing your photo was if that fish "lumps about" it's not going to do itself any good....

I'm sorry for offering advice, it wont happen again
