Default Roach "Splashy" surface rises ??

Hi Guys

Poppd up the Forth and clyde for a couple of hours yesterday chucking bunny bug's and clousers for pike sadly nothing doing........water vis was very poor only 3ft (normally gin clear)

Any way i digress, my eye was caught by a shoal of small roach 4"-5" they were making very splashy rises off the surface

Try as i could i couldnt see what they were taking ?? But the rises were very "violent and splashy" this activity is common almost all year, any one got any idea as to what they are taking ??

I really must go up and do some pond dipping with a fine net and see what critters are knocking about

I've seen this a lot and my 2p worth is; I think it happens when there are lots of smaller fish competing for food they rush around about a foot down. When they spot the food they all rush at it and are unable to stop quickly enough to stop them breaking the water surface. I think it's so splashy because they are turning side on to take the food, because of their mouth shape they have to either come up slowly at a steep angle or swivel at the last minute.
They are pretty easy to catch when they are behaving like that, but usually small (experience from bait fishing only).

All the best - Steve

I have seen this before on Ardingley Reservoir and Weirwood, The Roach were taking black buzzers as they hatched. I fished for them on Ardingley and went down to an 18 black gnat and caught loads of 4 to 6 inch fish. (Needless to say the trout fishing had been very slow)
I also witnessed a simlar rise at Brick Farm nr Hastings , (I don't like the place but was taken there) but this time it was tiny Rudd.

Cheers

When that happens on our water Pike will be caught in that area soon after.
I stood and watched this happening about 6 weeks ago, cast my 1/2 mackerell into the middle of the melay and soon had a brace of Pike 9lbs and 11lbs.
