Default Pike on the fly, Galway, Ireland.. Help please

Hi folks...

I am looking for any information relating to pike fishing in Co. Galway, or within say an hours drive.. I have fly fished for pike in Mayo, and a little in Galway, but would be grateful of any advice on waters in the galway region.

I have fished lough Ross and plan to fish ballyquirke one of the evenings this week... I have a wee inflatable boat that will just about do the job, so long as the wind doesn't pick up... I would be most interested in shallowish reeded lakes, preferably with some big buggers of pike...

Any advise of other destinations would be gratefully accepted. , even rivers or canals..
Also, if anyone is interested in a day or evenings fly fishing for pike give me a shout. We should be able to organise a bit of fishing

Cheers
JJ

I don't know about specifically on the Corrib, but there is a wealth of piking on the fly knowledge in either of Jim Sloan in Foxford, or Bodo Funke in Boyle.
Both of these guides are well worth a call.
If it's Ballyquirke at this time of the year, pay attention to light levels and water clarity and the location of the takes. Your angling log will figure it out for you over 2 - 3 sessions.

Hi Stylie. I have been in contact with joey1 in the past. A miserable git to be sure.. bloody foreign nationals coming over here and taking all our fish...
I will be tapping into his knowledge for sure, but as you can't trust them foreigners as far as you can throw them i thought i'd ask the rest of the forum....

Joey1 if you read this... prove me wrong and lets go catch some 30Lbers on Corrib...

Thanks mate. I didn't mention Corrib as that is a whole other days work... I know a wee bit about pike on Corrib, but its the wee lakes that i am interested in at the minute, as i don't have the boat on Corrib (yet) and only want to use my wee inflatable for the craic... I spoke to Jim before now that i think of it.. I love the lakes up in Kiltimagh.. Believe it or not my first pike on the fly was up that way, from the shore at dusk, and it weighed over 20LB... frightened the sh1te out of me as i was on my own and it was pretty much black dark when i got it in.

Any chance of your angling log from the last 2-3 seasons??? Save me having to wait and discover all those rubbish locations myself?? there may be a pint or two in it for ya....

cheers
JJ

I have actually caught a few pike in Corrib to 25lb(apprx) all by accident.
I caught my largest trolling a rapalla for trout in 30 odd foot of water near where a 20 pound trout had recently been caught(imagine my dissappontment).
I caught my next largest throwing a spoon for a nice salmon that had jumped in front of my drift, pike about 15lb (imagine my dissappointment).
My next larget of about 8lb came in only a few feet of water next to an island, in a big wave on my 6wt, grabbed the tail fly (imagine my dissappointment)
Not to be outdone I have brought my pike fly gear for the last three seasons, blanked every time (imagine my dissappointment).
So there you have the sum of my piking escapades on Corrib

Guilty of all the above... and a self confessed miserable git at the bar... when it's my round I'm always on the dumper!

JJ give me a bell mate - I also have a lake lined up for this year, as a tip off from one of the fisheries board lads as an mecca for big pike and that can only be accessed by river.

Aaah -- of course I meant Kenny Sloan - not that keyboard burp I typed!
I was debating whether to mention Jim Murray who is in the same area, and decided not to, Kenny is the main man there for piking.
