To begin with I'll probably be fishing on a bit of canal that I've had plenty of nice perch from. Theres a section of it that runs through open fields so plenty of space to cast not too wide and 4ft deep at the most usually.

I'll give the Ti traces a go but if it does have an adverse affect I'll change. I'm sure a split ring would sort things out though, probably wouldn't put them off either, I've watched the little buggers take the swivel at the other end of a trace before

I know what you mean about the weight. I've tied marabou jigs for use on the UL gear and used a jig head hook to tie them to, it does make them bob up and down nicely.

I'm not sure but I think the hooks I used are 2/0s, will invest in some more anyway lol

canals are not deep so a floating line should be OK but I'm still pretty new to fly fishing so best ask someone more experienced.

well you can use any density of line for lures (depending on what depth the water that you are fishing is) But if you are a begginer i would suggest using a floating line as they are easiest to use.

Hi All,

I had a few Perch on the fly through last summer, and by far the most effective pattern for me was a black and green gold head with a big marabou tail.

Had lot's of small ones up to about 1/2lb and then this, didn't have any scales but I guess it went 2lb?

Apologies for the awful picture, it was getting dark...

Forget the split rings try a Rappala knot. Some pike leaders can be knotted but you can try stiff mono such as Tynex although you may get bitten of by pike.
Why use lead for weight when Epoxy heads give nearly as much weight and can be "decorated".
Realy for shallow water a floatin g line with weighted fly (however you do it) is the best. But a slow intermediate is also pretty good. At the other end a fast sinker with a bouyant fly such a bomber worked in irregular pulls with enough time between for the fly to rise slightly in the water is very good.
Taken perch close to 4lb on this method.

Interesting stuff this. There is a lake near me, only about 3-4 acres were big Perches live. I fished a contest there last christmas (course), my one and only contest in 40 yrs. I arrived late and my peg was already drawn, number 13! The other guys all had huge poles, clothes that matched their tackle, loadsa different maggots of every colour and enough tac to start a shop.
I felt a little daunted with my ordinary match rod and tin of worms. Nevertheless I got down to it. Matey next door was pulling them out every 30secs, all about as big as my thumb.
Half time came and I had one tiddler. Sherry, Port, pork pie and mince pies were served in the car park-neat. Back to it, two freezing hours to go. Last hour I had a bite on the wiggliest worm in my tin...2.10lb! Wow. As I know the big uns are seldom alone I was straight back in. Ho-ho-ho within 5 mins I had a 2.8lb in the net.
Erm...I won lol. A litre of Whiskey, 40.00 and a bottle wine. Not sure they were well pleased but hey-ho.
I am going back next week with my fly rod having read the above posts...there are 4lb + Perch in this lake and quite a few of them to. Trace???
