Default Mullet in the Teifi

Have a bit of fishing on the Teifi coming up and have found out that there are mullet to be had in the lower reaches around Llechryd. Anybody fished for them ? I might give them a go, I like a challenge............a clue to what flies work would be handy..................birdsnest

Those mullet at Llechryd fool scores of anglers each year as they're frequently mistaken for sewin. Although they do regularly ascend the Teifi to that point and beyond they're very spooky in that part of the river as it's quite shallow - I wouldn't fancy my chances of hooking one at that point but no doubt someone will have had one.

I fly fish for bass at low water by Patch and the mullet can be caught on the fly there - they come up in good numbers with the tide. The broken ground is a productive spot and will give you much better sport than further up river, it's not too far to drive down from Llechryd.

You could try night fishing for them on the estuary if the river's too low or warm for the sewin, The mullet can be agressive feeders when they have the cover of darkness and it's a (reasonably) safe place to fish from on the northern shore. Poppit side can be dodgy as there's a channel that cuts you off if you fish the incoming tide from the sea up river.

The new bridge at Cardigan's a good spot for them too but I'd say fishing bread or a bread fly + loose fed bread would work best there.

If the river's flooded try the Penrhiw Inn at Abercych.

Many thanks DB.................some interesting prospects there. I didn't think of Bass but that could be plan B if the river is out of sorts. Then of course there is always plan C .....................birdsnest
