Default Wire v hard mono

"I don't basically fly fish for Pike deliberately but I have caught a fair few whilst playing the Rudder game for (hopefully) better sized trout."

Steve, while you were catching these pike did you experience many bite offs on takes from other pike or experience pike biting through the line when playing them? I only ask because there seems to be two distinct camps. One advocating the use of wire in the leader and others who use hard mono. [there is another camp who advocate braid, but that is another story] Your experiences may help shed some light on this controversial topic.

I myself have been wondering the same thing.

My thoughts are mono would do the job because surely the pike will be caught near the front of the mouth if retrieving?

It will be easier to cast aswell compared to a heavy wire trace.

Have done a fair bit of flying for Pike and found Mono to be well up to the job.

mono lol
tried 80lb floro a few yrs ago, got bitten off twice never again.
I have had over 100 pike on the fly and most have been hooked inside the mouth with the trace coming through there teeth. I can count on one hand the times they have been hooked outside the mouth.

I use pro leader but this really shows up in the water would be intrested in mono as it would be a lot more discrete. But aint convinced a pike could not bite through 80lb mono.
Whats the general opions on this matter.

Have a look at the forums in the States and Canada. Most pike anglers are moving away from mono because of this. Also look inside the mouth of a 20lb pike. 80lb floro no problem.
