Default Loch pike

Going fishing on Saturday and half the day i'll be spending fly fishing for pike. I'll be there from 8 in the morning till 6 at night and was wondering whats the better time for pike feeding? Will i spend the morning fishing for them or is it better in the afternoon?

I agree with sweenytodd, it all depends. I used to fish one particular spot for pike and 11:00am till about 1:00pm seemed to be the magical time for those pike but weather, location and time of year im sure all have an impact

Greenock - have a look at this site, its in Swedish but you'll be able to follow it. Scroll down until you hit one of the years (eg År 2001, 2002, 2009 etc) and click on one of the dates - at the bottom of the (each) diary page you will see the time of day when Sören caught the pike, the rest of the info is temperature wind etc

Sören Essebo has been FFishing for Pike since the early '70's and he has caught hundreds and hundreds of Pike on the Fly, his web-based records (and he is meticulous) go back to 2001. Admittedly the fish are caught in the Baltic which is a tad different to a Loch but I think you might be able to gleam some info regarding time of day when the fish seem to feed.

Have fun learning Swedish

I love that site! Sören Essebo used to do the journal in English once upon a time and I tied a few of his pike sara flies but never had much luck with it.

I sometimes think that some venues can be time specific... there is one venue I fish and I swear that the pike feed on flies at 0730hrs and 1930hrs and I think they clean up when the match boys go home for their tea having nicely prebaited the swims for the prey fish to feed in and then the pike to do their stuff!

me neither but Sören never uses anything else. The BIG advantage of his fly particularly in the smaller sizes is that you can cast it with a #5 weight. If in his statistics you see that he has been using a #7 weight, then generally speaking he is fishing from a boat with a sinking line during the summer months (Pike stay offshore in deeper water), however as the water temp drops below about 14degs (end of September ...ish) they move inshore. He then switches over to wade-fishing and a lighter rod.

@offshore - Dave have you ever tried fishing for Pike with a switch rod? I've been experimenting with it recently and will go full bore on it this autumn, loaded with a skagit head you can chuck out some really serious pike flies with ease.

No I haven't - Which Switch are you looking at? My problem with one water is that I know there is a good structure in the middle of the lake and I can't get a line out to it... 2oz lead required! Some serious fish around it! And the bailiff won't let me boat it or float tube it!!
